Master Project Theme IV has finished off with students presenting their works to Tutors Olaf Gipser, Marta Malé-Alemany and guest critics Dana Cuff from UCLA www.spa.ucla.edu/dept.faculty, Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto from Ecologic Studio www.ecologicstudio.com. Opening up different aspects of conversations while presentations were taking place, Students works were various topics with different approaches. The FabBots have evolved theoretically as well as contextually, material systems and script based fabrication technologies have also been explored to their limits.

IaaC at the Pecha Kucha Barcelona

With its events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide, PechaKucha Night (a japanese term for the sound of “chit chat” night) in Barcelona which was on the 18th of june has been presented by IaaC co-director Marta Malé-Alemany, where she presented the the IaaC Masters studio FabBots and the exhibition at the Design Hub museum of Barcelona which is currently showing the same works with lots of other prototypes of digitally fabricated elements and systems. Masters project in digital fabrication methods, devices and emergent material formations is continuing with its research. Taking the concepts from their previous projects (fab bots) some students are transforming these into different situations where their machines can be used in other fabrication methods. With team Olaf gipser and faculty Marta Malé–Alemany there was an individual review with each student to push their projects in terms of computation, mechanism, concept and theory.

Opening day at the Design Hub Barcelona

The Design Hub Barcelona is now exhibiting works of famous artists and designers in the world of digital fabrication, Manufacturing Laboratory as a theme – is an exhibition With a variety of works ranging from permanent exhibitions, to a laboratory where one can participate and manufacture real time, and includes workshops and conferences. The permanent Exhibition – Curated by IaaC co-director Marta Malé–Alemany, shows different applications of 3D printing technologies in the world of medicine, food and buildings.Students from School of Architecture at the Architectural Association (AA) together with IaaC students have also exhibited their projects under guidance by Marta Malé–Alemany, Jeroen Van Ameijde (London) and faculty Victor Vina (Iaac-Barcelona).
The Dhub Fab an extension of the fab Lab is also placed at the museum where one can manufacture his/her own projects there in real time. Fablab team will assist these manufacturing processes.

Each student can further their fab-bots in a certain way, now there are variations in the robots, some students are developing their projects through computation and potential outcomes, while others are researching on the fabrication techniques and how to add systems to have it fabricating different prototypes. There are also others with Vernacular research interests where their robots will be sited in. Students discussed these ideas with team Olaf Gipser and Faculty Marta Malé-Alemany, on how to develop their projects.

Students have been working on their (FaB)BOTS Digital Tectonics Research Studio, now they will contextualize it and instrumentalize the fabrication wokr on two levels- Critically reflect on it from within theoretical notions of architectural and cultural discourse, and actualize it within concrete geographical, social, political, and economic environments.
On saturday with the first class with Olaf Gipser and faculty Marta Malé-Alemany, students were introduced to the theoretical framework of their projects while also deciding on how they would further with their fabBots.

Solar House Construction at IaaC

As the time for the Solar Decathlon competition is approaching, IaaC is filled with energy of students (both IaaC and FabAcademy), Solar house researchers, faculty and participants finishing its assembly which is composed of over 1500 pieces milled from 2.5mx12m LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) panels. The construction of every part requiring different techniques. They have been designed and fabricated so that they fit HV/AC ventilations, bolts, and tension cables holes and windows.Sanding, Spraying ,coating, milling and cutting all done simultaneously, all done as a team in the institute.

RSIII. Digital Tectonics (FAB)BOTS – Final Presenations

The final presentations for the design research studio ended with MAA students presenting their works, to invited guest Mara Balestrini (Communicator / Microsoft), Borja Martinez(Art Director,www.losiento.net), Olaf Gipser( Architect,www.olafgipser.com), Jordi Truco(Architect / hybrid-a.blogspot.com), Carme Romero(Research Director www.hangar.org Jorge Velazquez (Robotic Engineer www.pal-robotics.com), Olga Subiros(Architect / www.programcollective.com), Catalina Pollack (Architect), Esteban Colmenares (Architect), Faculty Marta Malé-Alemany , Victor Vina, Luis Fraguada, Assistant Cesar Cruz Cazares and fellow students.
Overall guests and critics were impressed by the amount of work done by students in the brief amount of time (four months) – This work involved forming a thesis for the development of the machine – the accessibility, adaptability, and specifity of the project. This also includes computation based on scripting, processing and Arduino, material engineering where some made their custom material to suit their machine, to making tools which adhere to the type of material that is made for the situation. seven different projects, seven different outcomes.

Invented to grow and learn

Motivated to promote reflective thinking, analytical and critical thought to children between 10-16 years old, FabLab Kids is a creative laboratory that nurtures them to develop their intellingence, creativity and imagination alongside technological aspects.The major issues concern improving the future, energy, self-sufficiency, the use of resources,The use of resources, non-consumption, ecology, and self-sufficiency are some of the concerns of fablab kids. Fablab Kids Barcelona under the fablab bcn is currently teachings these children every friday. Their projects include using the laser cutter to design structures they want to design, using the Rx modella milling machine to make electronic boards, and using different kinds of materials(led lights, batteries, cables, speakers, sponges, motors) to make their projects.For more information on fablab kids go to www.fablabkids.org

FabLab Barcelona

The Fab Lab program is part of the MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA) which broadly explores how the content of information relates to its physical representation, fab.cba.mit.edu.

FabLab Barcelona is part of the FabLab central where students from Peru, Ethiopia, Italy and Spain are learning. With the future FabLabs under formation in both Ethiopia and Peru, students are taking courses from the MIT program, ‘How to make almost anything’. This includes projects from design tools (laser cutter, CNC miller, 3d scanner and printer ) to PCB design, microcontroller programming, Networking and communications and machine design. There have also been taking various workshops like the Fabfi workshop where the goals are to create simple, low cost and easy to create antennas,more information at fabfiblog.fabfolk.com.

Proceeding with their biweekly assignments students are also preparing for their final projects, where each one is now developing his/her final thesis project which will be presented by the end of the academic year. More of students projects can be found at fabacademy blog or fabacademy labs.
