The Eco-Machinic Apparatus- a systematic thinking which provides the cultural subsratum for an understanding of the relation ship between cause and effect, Making operational insturements for the organization of complex systems. The Master Project I has finished off with students presenting this apparatus along with a series of experiments and videos they have done. Discussions with Tutors Marco Poletto and Claudia Pasquero along with guest critics, Faculty Marta Malé-Alemany and Dana cuff from UCLA spa.ucla.edu/deptfaculty have brought about some interesting and definitive conclusions on the experiments.

With the last class of Masters Thesis I – the eco-machinic experiments are continuing, with only four days left for presentations, students are now working on their booklet, videos and panels where they present the series of works through out their project period. With Marco Poletto and Claudia Pasquero as tutors of the course, they gave students guidance on how to finish with their experimentations.

The Eco-Machinic Apparatus for each student is developing. With Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto from ecologicstudio as tutors students had been showing their development in research of their specific apparatus. Branching mechanisms, creating forms out of melted wax, recycling materials, and lots of other different systems where one can read and interpret different situations based on the research theme, With two weeks left to develop their projects, students are preparing for their final research outcome and documentation of the process.

The eco-Machinic Apparatus is developing, each student presented their starting ideas to Marco Poletto and Claudia Pasquero from the ecoLogic Studio. They discussed natural systems, how students could interpret and develop their work through out the next month. Material properties, natural systems , light and sound systems of various types were explored. There will be more research done through out the week.

The Theme in Eco-Machinic Apparatus with Tutors from Ecologic Studio-Marco Poletto and Claudia Pasquero - www.ecologicstudio.com – has started. Students were presented with examples of prototypes of the eco-machine, the apparatus and what the thinking behind it. This is a Thesis framework which will concentrate on the development of suchinstrument, the “eco-Machinic Apparatus”, an architectonic platform wheretechnology embedded in new forms of synthetic life. “The Apparatus” offersthe opportunity to incorporate scientific and technical ‘know how’ while testingin real time its effects within the realm of architectural and urban design.

While systemic thinking provides the cultural substratum for an understanding of the relationship between cause and effect in the realm of complexity, the discipline of architecture still lacks operational instruments for the organization of complex material transformations [artificial ecologies].

This thesis framework will therefore concentrate on the development of such instrument, the “eco-Machinic Apparatus”, an architectonic platform where technology is embedded in new forms of synthetic life. The”Apparatus” offers the opportunity to incorporate scientific and technical ‘know how’ while testing in real time its effects within the realm of architectural and urban design.

This research framework is organized around the development of the following 3 components:

The Apparatus:

Students will be asked to formulate their initial research hypothesis by extracting from their previous projects: – material properties – organizational principles and logics –energetic and informational flows.

These will be then synthesized in a first working model were the emergent patterns of self organization and potential for systemic self regulation will be explored.

This “Apparatus” will then become the main tool of design research allowing direct evaluation of architectural effects as a result of material and organizational changes; every experimental iteration will lead to a refining of the model and its material qualities, sensing capabilities and behavioral intelligence. As the experiment progresses a more complex behavior can be nurtured and qualitative differences can be appreciated.

LabBook:

While the “Apparatus” provides the main mean of research and architectural expression, the LabBook will be the recording instrument of the research activity. Formatted as a diary, it will register any daily activity, experimental findings, background research, fabrication drawings, comments and thoughts, conceptual and critical arguments. At the end of the course it will be bound as hard covered book.

VideoScenario:

A 2 min. video will be accompanying the final presentation as a mean to recreate a design scenario based on the behavior and performance of the “Apparatus” and its architectural scope and or repercussions. Presented as a conceptual scenario it can integrate ‘extracted scenes’ form research videos, stills or videos form the experiments, as well as staged scenarios of actualization.

A dedicated source of research links and cultural references to support the intern’s work will be made available upon arrival.
