Thursday 9th of January 2014
David Mocarski introduced by Enric Ruiz Geli
Lecture: ART CENTER meets IAAC

@ 19.30, IAAC Auditorium
Open to the Public

After the Lecture Refreshments will be offered at Media-TIC, 22@Barcelona.

Cloud 9 and and Art Center are building together the project “a Mediterranean case study” in Aiguablava. The professors David Mocarski, James Meraz, Jason Pilarski and Kenneth Cameron and four students are in Barcelona to develop the construction and to meet the IAAC – FabLab. Art Center is the school number one in America in car design and product design. They are the designers of Apple stores, they have the cameras of James Cameron, designers of BMW cars, of TESLA cars, and the professor David Mocarski is the chairman of the Graduate & Under Graduate Environmental Design Department at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, he has an approach Holistic.

DAVID MOCARSKI

David Mocarski has explored the boundaries of the creative process for more than thirty years. He is the principal of Arkkit forms design, as well as chairman of the Graduate & Under Graduate Environmental Design Department at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena USA. Arkkit forms was founded in 1982 as a highly inter-disciplinary design studio. Arkkit forms has explored projects as diverse as packaging for Baron Philippe Rothschild, France and Taylor of Old Bond Street London, explored Furniture collections for DWR, Design Within Reach, Fiam Italia, Driade, Frag, Viccarbe, Ello, Galerkin and Artedi, designed corporate Brand & Identity development for: Vichan Winery, Napa Valley and CrossLynn Vineyards, entertainment graphics and collateral for Sony-Columbia-Tristar and a long list of contract, residential and exhibition spatial projects. Mocarski is known Internationally for his one-off and limited edition furniture works as well as residential & commercial spatial projects internationally.

David has also been involved with art & design education for more than thirty five years. In addition to developing the curricular direction for the Environmental Design department at Art Center College of Design, he has taught Fine Arts, Illustration, Graphics & Packaging, photography and Industrial design. Many of his students have gained significant global recognition for their efforts. His sponsored studios with Bernhardt design has defined a new model for how industry interfaces with education. He has been instrumental in the evolution of Art Center ’s International Study Abroad programs in Tokyo, Copenhagen, and Berlin and has worked closely with DesignMatters on Humanitarian projects for: GE Healthcare Africa project and Un Techo Para Chile “ Safe Water Chile, Peru & Columbia” He has been has been instrumental in the development of theGrauate & Under Graduate Environmental Design program at Art Center and it’s focus on “Designing Spatial Experience”. He has been an educational leader at Art Center since 1978.

Mocarski’s work is highly sculptural in nature, driven by research, content and context. He believes that design is “from the first moment of encounter to the last moment of interaction”. Whether it’s creating an object, a place or a destination, he feels that the outcome is always about providing a supreme experience and that the most effective design is always about: attraction, involvement, interaction & producing satisfaction and/or inclusion beyond expectation. He also believes that nothing is more compelling than engagement & surprise, whether t be in the design of objects or spaces. Mocarski is known for exploring new materials, technologies and manufacturing techniques in his search of meaningful solutions. What is clear in his work is a unrelenting passion for all things art and design.

Mocarski has exhibited his work internationally since 1971, first in fine arts and later with limited edition and commission furniture works. His mentors are the early modernists such as Carlo Mollino, Gerrit Rietveld, Jean Prouve and Eileen Gray. He has always held a strong commitment to the idea of bringing “Art into Life”.

During the event, Enric Ruiz Geli explained his concept of architecture through some projects that he developed with his office Cloud 9. Buildings like “Villa Nurbs”, “Once…a wave” or the “Hotel Prestige Forest” have a total digital background that allows the architect to conceive and produce the building avoiding traditional constraints. Beside this important fact, Enric understands the environment as particles conformed by different chemical elements (Co2, Ho2…), and face every project trying to unfold an architectonical answer through this idea of particles, that becames not only a visualisation tool but also and specially a production tool.
