Fab Car is a collaborative project towards the implementation of a modular car. The basic structure of the car has been designed and built in the Fab Lab Barcelona, and will be exhibited at Fab10 from the 2nd to the 8th of July 2014.

Don’t miss out on your chance to take part in the Fab Car project: find the Fab Car space at Fab10 where you will be invited to add your touch and work on the project!

You will be helping create customizable, modular pods that can be slotted onto the chassis of our open source vehicle: the FabCar. In collaboration with HP, OpenSource Vehicle and 5 other FabLabs around the world (Garagem FabLab (SP. Brasil), FabLab San Diego, FabCafe Tokyo, FaLab Manchester and Vigyam Ashram in India) FabLab Barcelona is setting out to design a concept car based on the needs and desires of the FabLab and Maker communities.

The chassis of the FabCar is being built out of composite material developed by the team specifically for the project and composed of bamboo and burlap bonded with eco friendly Entropy Resins epoxy solution, donated by their European distributor, Ferrer-Dalmau.

For more information on this product please visit entropy resins.eu

The vehicle is based on OSV’s open source chassis, the Tabby (OSVehicle.com). Around this, we are designing and producing the entire body of the FabCar at FabLab Barcelona and we will present the vehicle at the Fab10 conference on July 2nd at Barcelona’s Design Museum, DHUB. The FabCar concept revolves around giving people the ability to modify, customise and adapt the vehicle to their specific needs at any given time. In order to do this, we need designs for a system of pods, which anyone can customise or download and make themselves at their local Lab.

Different pods would provide different functionalities, such as a bike rack, a food truck or an interactive installation at an event. So for this year’s FabJam, we invite you to work on one or more of these pods. Choose one of the many use cases the pods could enable (carrying a kayak, carrying more passengers, a mobile drone factory, anything!) and design both the pod, and help with how this would be anchored to the vehicle. The car will be all electric and feature drive by wire technology. It is designed for the short trips commonly taken in urban environments. Our goal is to get the maximum carrying capacity from a small vehicle.

In response to the request of the CCCB Barcelona to create furniture – in particular for the Big Bang Data Exhibition – that would fit the ever changing needs of a space for workshops, the Fab Lab Barcelona and the design team of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) proposed several options.

“The Water Team”, a team of Master in Advanced Architecture students designed a modular system with the goal of creating an open source design that would fulfil the needs of the diverse people using the space offering multifunctional possibilities.

The choice of this design as the winner is based not only on aesthetics, but on the strength and sturdiness of the piece, as it will be used by thousands of people over time.

The following parameters were also taken into account: the use of plywood as the material chosen for the design, time laser cutting boards and hands and quick mounting system.

The result is this open source design that follows the philosophy of good digital fabrication practices linked to Fab10 Barcelona, an event that will bring together the international community of Fab Labs from the 2nd through the 8th of July in Barcelona.

Designed and Manufactured by Master in Advanced Architecture Students: Ruxandra Iancu Bratosin, Gokhan Catikkas, Hriday Saini, Maria Czajcynska and Rodion Eremeev.

This year at RobArch2014, Robotic Fabrication in Architecture, Art and Design, IAAC|Fab Lab Barcelona – Alexandre Dubor and Guillem Caprodon – along with Make it Locally – Gabriel Bello Diaz – and the University of Michigan – Ellie Abrons and Adam Fure -, are running the Sense-It 6-Axis Workshop at the University of Michigan.

Sense-It explores the potentials of materially-directed generative fabrication through an integration of research in robotic sensing, plastic deposition, and generative code. This approach tests the limits of a machine-material-sensor interface to act autonomously, without direct adjustments from an observing operator, and capitalizes on sensor responsiveness and material agency to produce unpredictable outcomes. This workshop moves away from optimization and efficiency as the primary drivers of digital fabrication in pursuit of a model where materials assume maximum agency in the fabrication process. Feedback loops between machining parameters, real-time sensors, and plastic deposition will infuse the workshop results with both intelligence and an intentional instability, where the outcomes can be guided but never fully predicted.

The Workshop participants are working in groups of three to four with Arduino microcontrollers, basic electronic components, and sensors to developing their own logic for the workshop’s unique sensor-deposition workflow. Manipulating simple code in Kuka Robot Language (KRL) and Arduinos, each group is testing physical deposition patterns using the sensor of their choice. Through design strategies comprised of small adjustments to the workflow’s many parameters—robot movements, speed of actuation, limits of sensor data, etc.—catalogue of possible outcomes is being created.

We are proposing a workshop directed to all those who wish fully develop a project that combies digital fabrications technologies and interactive capacities (physical computation).

Since in the 30′s modern reprogrammable computers were theorised, these have gone from mainstream to cellular and from isolated machines to nodes of the Web. These two propoerties – miniaturization and hyperconectivity – announce a new state of invisible ubiquity for devices that consume+produce information. A state of fusion with a tangible world that surrounds us, where our body is the last border.

Digital fabrication technologies allow us to prototype this integration between wearables and technology towards information|interaction.

Fileds of Application:

Fashion and product design, interaction design, performance and scenographic arts, sports science, health science, prosthetics, pedagogy, material engineering, etc.

Requisits:

No technical knowledge is needed.

The participation in this workshop is subject to the previous presentation of a project proposal. The tutors will evaluate the inclusion of the proposals (as participants in the workshop program) and these will be evaluated and accepted in order of reception. There is no limit to the number of proposals per person, but only one proposal will be accepted per person.

Barcelona is a city with an important and imposing industrial history, and that is currently supporting and pushing for innovation in many fields, including economy, culture and education. The main mission for the city of Barcelona is to redefine the future of cities based on a self-sufficiency model for the production of resources and social well-being.

In this sense, Barcelona will be the first city in the world to have a public network of Fab Labs, as part of the cities future plan, and in line with Fab10′s main theme: From Fab Labs to Fab Cities, by which the city of Barcelona aims to have at least one Fab Lab in every district. This implementation will allow to discover the talent present in the city itself, give the citizens and users the possibility to gain understanding and control of the technology available and its potentials.
