Aquatic Energy Carrier System
Seif El-Din Shawky / MAA 2012

Our purpose is to formulate a fragment of infrastructure, an input/output component that integrates into a supply-demand based adaptive mainframe, or the aptly named smart city. In this case of our studio’s agenda, my objective was specifically an energy-driven design with the starting point being a power source, animated by the potentials of salt as resource and out-at-sea deployment. It was always meant to produce more than it consumes, a culmination of conservation, filling in the gap in the urban operating system. Continuing that, the proposal revolves around the development of a prototypical unit, which moves across the aquatic territories of Barcelona, yet moves seemingly on its own. It’s propulsion is the wind, it’s battery is a salt-fresh chemical cataclysm, it’s generator a simple piezoelectric bimorph energy harvester, and it’s guide a control center at the Estany de cal Tet in Llobregat’s marshland. Working essentially on the parameters of wind speed, direction and a feedback inverse rotation mechanism, it is parametric in the sense that it is dynamically-oriented in both program and form. Nymphaeaceae acts on two levels; as a singular unit, and as a collective. It is not a notion of imposition, it is an environment that succumbs to its surroundings.

‘Ode to Salt’ is a series of films with focus on remedying the Llobregat delta’s delicate eco-system and symbiotic relationship with the port of Barcelona through a milieu of reformative interventions. The title is inspired by the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda’s poem ‘Ode to Salt’, and is derived from salt as a tangible yet ethereal and elastic medium through which the emergence of large urban structures out at sea may crystallize.

However, note the following film is a narrative-driven segment with an atmospheric quality. It is not meant as a concrete realisation of physicality but rather as a demonstration of the forces at play and the underlying potentials existing within the site.

Anna Popova, Emily Sato, Minu Surana

VIDEO

A port area is usually perceived to be full of cruises, containers and people trespassing. However looking in the other side we noticed the locals and tourists trying to use the empty spaces in Port of Barcelona in their own ways.

The seed of an idea was hence laid. Why not give back the port to the city by activating the dead spaces for the people to use, manipulate and design in their own unique ways?

Analysing the logistics of the Port, the loading and unloading of containers, goods, oil and other products, we noticed that every time a container ship is loaded from the port it would leave behind empty spaces that remain untouched for a span of few hours. These temporal spaces only helped us strengthen our idea further.

We went on to study these void formations throughout the port in the span of 24 hours, to understand the scale and quality of these spaces.

We were able to categorize these voids based on their cause of formation, that is container voids, parking voids, factory voids and so on in a span of 24 hours.

The opportunities generated from these were numerous and of unique characteristics.

Hypothesis:
a space may be defined by its usage, environment, volume and time. Port de Barcelona is one such space being characterized and having unfathomed attributes of the same, yet to be explored. An orchestrated play of such spaces may be constructive, liberating and help redefine the fundamental concept of port spaces.

Void optimization would only be possible if the user (like you and me) would be able to access them with ease.
The concept of simple user interfaces could help achieve this.

Our site intervention concentrates on the container area of the port.

We rearranged and grouped the existing voids to create optimal formations.

The concept of our system deployment is based on existing real-time data collected at the port.
From these sensor detecting voids, anchoring points for the infrastructure can be defined.

A panel of 14 bending components sits in an area of 12 by 4 containers.

The former mentioned anchoring points are realised with the help of locking systems placed at container length intervals.

Pushing systems exist at the end of each component to achieve the infrastructure.

The consequences of our intervention at an urban scale could provide various playful scenarios in the future, leading to new building formations, typologies and so on.

This prototype explores the potential of unfolding/folding of a series of surfaces by manipulating a flexible rod at its base. The challenge lay at developing a response for all the surfaces when force is applied on the rod at a singular point and understanding the joint between the surfaces for an even perpendicular formation.
We particularly had to look into the material response. Thorough experiments were done into applying the right material which is float-able and has the correct strenth to take weight. Therefore the material experiments including light weight wood, mdf and pvc surfaces. The final material chosen was an extremely light yet stable polyeutherene foam , which is extremely close to the actual material (eps foam ) to be used on the site.
This workshop gave us an insight to develop the pattern generated on the surfaces in accordance with the pedestrian movement.

To develop a prototype with a performative behavior, was the target given for the workshop held by Edouard Cabay. We translated the work done during studio into a concise notion of a prototype to understand a module , or a simple aggregation of them in order to move forward with our projects.

The prototype built during the workshop consists on a surface, which target is to modify itself according to the usage and intensity of mobility happening on it, by responding to the pressure of the occupancy (weight) it deforms/reacts with and emerging landscape which can provide program along the surface, in those parts which lack usage.

Pyshically, it is composed of a grid-made-surface, which is glued to a lycra fabric, and since the grid is composed of individual modules, hexagons, in this case, they are able to stretch or come together as needed, underneath the surface a box holding an air mattress which gives the performative behavior, it is maintaining a constant air pressure for the surface which allows the action/reaction to the weight and pressure.

The vertical elements in each module are being used as “witnesses” of the changes in the performative topography, it can be obvious to the eye or extremely discrete, and this pointers help us understand how the deformation of the surface is happening, also, something interesting was discovered by their usage, and element quite similar to this could be introduced in terms of mobility, to bring a new visual language, boundaries, stratification and permeability into the surface.

Interesting things were discovered, specially how the air mechanism needs more research in order to determine and adequate system for it, something that can control the deformation aside from the pressure. It was very important exercise since we discovered hidden behaviors, restraints and possibilities, during this process.

The entire structure will work in three main concepts, Morph (each strip piece), Strech (several pieces to create curves) and Push (entire structure).

The prototype we built during the workshop its manually modified to achieve different arcs depending on the angle of each “keystones” that generates the strip. The next step is to connect a longer-improved surface to a force able to move it and be responsive to the different inputs (flows) through sensors connected to an arduino board and a database.

Invisible City as a project has gone through a process of research, analysis and hypothesis and we are now looking at the translation of the design objectives into a feasible project.

Sound forms the central trigger of a design system that is an intervention in the visible-invisible landscape of the ocean and the port. Data gathered by sound sensors, placed at the bottom of the ocean bed and along the port shoreline, is translated into a matrix of usable spectrum of values. This then activates the sound responsive platform to rise to and above the water surface to varying heights, depending on the sound input received. The scale of the expanse and height of the platforms is the output, directly related to the input-sound.

Constraints and parameters were arrived at taking into consideration time available for the movement of the platforms, ship and cargo movement on the surface of the water, port activities as well as the design programme of the Sound City activities.
