Research focused on the issue of increased salinity levels in the Mediterranean Basin, and its consequences on the Mediterranean’s border ecological forestry.

Each year the temperature of the deep layer of the Western Mediterranean increases by 0.002ºC, and its salt levels increase by 0.001 units of salinity. These changes, although minimal from year to year, have been continuously and constantly occurring at a faster pace since the 1990s.

Also, the Mediterranean is a closed space, so certain land-use issues such as damming rivers could change how much freshwater is flowing into the ocean and diluting the saltwater.

The effect this may have will be dire, consequently affecting all trades of farming and harvesting around the borders of the Mediterranean sea, particularly affecting the Olive industries (olive oil, canned olives, etc..). More urgent will be the effect increased salinity will have on ecological cycles and wildlife that are reliant on foliage on the fertile coasts of Spain, Italy and Greece, routinely damaging self-sustaining habitats for thousands of species to neo-Messinian proportions.

The network begins with the gas fields and ends with the end-users. Natural gas is transferred in liquid state on sea and in air state on pipework.

Juxtaposing the natural gas infrastructure with the city; the pipelines with the roads, the research questioned the interrelationship of urbanism, landscape & infrastructure.

The mapping project looks closer into the process of waste management in the city of Barcelona specifically into cut-and-fill processes where resources are extracted (cut) and the “pit” and transportation infrastructure is recycled as landfills (fill). The map overlaps recent and old mining activities with municipal and construction landfills sites. The results reveal the reuse of what otherwise could be considered totally unrelated processes.

Satellite images of the Vall d’en Joan landfill restoration in relation with the stone and sand quarries of the Garraf Massif also show a closer typological relationship with geological processes and land topography. Projects such as the restoration of Vall d’en Joan by Battle i Roig Architectes could be refer to as a “pit urbanism” of sorts, to restore topographically transformed areas after the cut-and-fill infrastructures lifespan has ended.

Our objective for the workshop was to work at macro scales, collecting first, information about the distribution of the different basins and aquifers on the Mediterranean, and second, the policy of land distribution. Overlaying this two data layers we identify incongruencies between the geopolitical territorial distribution and the distribution of water, which hinders the supply and generates many conflicts between nations.

The main task was mapping the telecommunication cables in the bathymetry of the Mediterranean to have a better understanding of the information transfer between continents and to comprehend the form of this dynamic flow in fiber cables which respond to the complexity of the Mediterranean bathymetry.

The first step was milling two experimental models on foam for the bathymetry and the water body of the Mediterranean. After that, we started to map the fiber cables which owned by fifty five different telecommunication companies and which separated to two main groups: cables work for big scale connecting continents like SeaMeWe-3 ..etc. and the second group works between two countries or small scale only. Then the final step of the workshop was to represent this dynamic relation in a bigger scale and self explanatory model.
