Today during the digital fabrication class it has been presented the first assignment results.

This first step has been focused on the development of a system based on component proliferation using the cutting machine; the main requierement of the exercise was to reach a focal point of the two windows in one of the main rooms of IAAC, creating a virtual ceiling to generate a continuos surface in the space.

Students assembled all the cutted components and installed them in the hexagons given as a work area. 25 groups (of 3 students each) developed different proposals using polypropylene as base material, together with the plywood structure of the hexagon.

Tutors: Tomas Diez, Edouard Cabay
Assistant: Alexandre Dubor

Today the MAA students presented the work of the 2nd Digital Fabrication exercise. The aim of this project was to explore 3 dimensional manufacturing processes by the use of the CNC milling machine, and the development of molds for casting pieces. The work has been focused in the design of a construction brick module, the fabrication of its mild, and the process of casting the parts to construct a three dimensional wall, which has generated a spatial installation in the IAAC building.

The assignment consists in developing milling techniques that would affect the molds for the brick, through “RhinoCAM” plug-in.

The group tried most of the tools and finally, developed the following strategies: 1. Horizontal roughing, for all. 2. Two parallel finishings, at the direction of 45 and 135 degrees. 3. Finally, parallel finishing for the plane parts of the molds.

The final molds have the texture of positive points, that after being casted, print themselves as voids, creating the texture of fabric.

Because of the group being the first one of the batch, the mold given by us, was the curviest.

Therefore, during the casting process, two bricks would come off broken of the molds.

After experimenting with gauze, which resulted evident in the final texture of one brick, the group discovered that what needed to be adjusted was the technique for taking the bricks out of the molds.
