The task started with an analysis of what it’s happening in this area because of the physical division that the river Besos creates. We mention the problematic by statistics of facts that occur in both sides and then we selected a random data about the sound and took it for develop a specific project for this subject.

We mapped the levels of sound where we can see that the noise is higher than the standars recommended for health, which are between 40 and 75 dBA.

Our concept tries to create a physical platform made of sound where we can connect the highest points and build a pedestrian path that changes depending of the sound data in real time, according to the amount of people that are interacting in this area.

We translate the dBA data into a 3D surface and we run it in Galapagos to find what we think is the most optimun level for the people of this place, allowing them to escape from the noise, improving their pedestrian way to live.

Textile structure for Barcelona area using Kangaroo, Geco and Galapagos.

The task was to use Galapagos to optimize a shape using evolucionary computation, for that I design a textile structure to provide shade and cover in an area in the City of Barcelona. For a more accurate shape I used Kangaroo to apply gravity forces in the structure and stiffness for the springs that support the textile.

I´ve also used Geco plugin to calculate the total radiation analysis from Ecotect and imported to my Rhino surface, The idea was to optimize the position of the textile and stiffness of the springs to give more shade to pedestrians placing the fabric in a position that will block more radiation.

Parameters considered:

- Total radiation (all year)

- Gravity forces

- Spring stiffness

- Weather file from barcelona

HIGH DENSITY ENERGY STORAGE USING SELF-ASSEMBLED MATERIALS

The assignment is related to our methane research for the Self Sufficient studio. The challenge of this exercise is to propose an approach in theoretical design of material at the atomic scale that can maximize the amount of stored of methane in a given volume. The methane molecules are attracted to surfaces, while being repelled from each other. We attempt to simulate the interaction between methane and the Calabi-Yau surface area of a hypothetically ideal “methane-catching” material in a sample volume (scale of a methane molecule: pico meters).

___________INTRO

Porous crystals (Metal-Organic Frameworks) are excellent materials for natural gas storage due to their nanoscopic pores and incredibly high surface area. The script generates hypothetical metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), visualizing the most promising structures. MOFs then can be synthesized and tested in the laboratory conditions.

A Calabi-Yau space is used by physicists to describe parts of nature that are too small to see with naked human eye. It is believed, that matter is composed of atoms, and the distances between the components of the atoms are measured at 0.000000000000001 meters (pico meters). Methane CH4 is comprised of one atom of carbon and four atoms of hydrogen. The diameter of the entire molecule is 398.8 pico meters. In the script we will be attempting to optimize the population of CH4 molecules attracted to the surface while ignoring the molecules free floating in-between.

___________DISCRETIZATION

The geometrical structure of methane molecule is a tetrahedron. Since a tetrahedron can be inscribed into a sphere, we are using later geometry in our optimization. The number of molecules will be counted according to the spheres’ diameter, projected onto the surface.

___________LOGIC

\\find the bounding box of the mesh

\\populate the bounding box with a 3dimensional diagrid of spheres that are their own radius’s distance from their neighbour

\\find which spheres collide with the mesh

\\cull all spheres that do not collide

\\run galapagos in different surface and angle configurations

___________ITERATIONS

Using galapagos we generated different options according to our variables in the solution space.

The goal of the GPS mapping here is to show how life of three people is intertwined over common paths, the GPS mapping shows prominent nodes of the city and some important paths common to all. The paths create some enclosed regions making very interesting divisions of the city. The 1st person is denoted by red, 2nd by green and 3rd by red. The concentration of the colors at certain spots is denoting the places where there was more time spent by the individual.

GPS tracking can be a great medium to extract information which can be used to make observations in various fields, it can be very handy to derive stats and data.

The grasshopper definition has an input of a .gpx file which is then converted to coordinated, these coordinates are then remapped on to an imported goggle map. The representation of each GPS tracked point is in the form of a extruded circles.
