Having a mosaic depicting a suggestive shape, but the uncertainty of what the shape is going to be after the accommodation of the tiles is a mental-unexpected game product of the positioning and abstraction.

The primary goal was to design a kinetic structure that is supported by crossing elements of the same material to each other. This ultimately created a self supported free standing structure with the help of crossing components.

We created several axes by grouping rods together to make the flexible components more durable. To achieve a durable structure that would support itself, we used two three-pieced rods and one four-piece rod. We joined all of these elements with by designing 3d printed joints.

There is a one-hole joint, three-hole joint and a four hole joint. Using the laser cutter helped us attach the joints to the board precisely.

The first experiments started trying to make use of a single repeating element that could generate a stable structure. While this approach was rich in stability and had the advantage of very little material waste, it had the disadvantage of not being able to reach impressive heights. Based on these results, a decision was made to design a structure based on two repeating elements, one joinery piece and one main vertical piece.

Trials using 1mm cardboard and 3 mm plywood sheets

The digital trials and final design (Rhino)

The goal was to create a simple elegantly flowing structure with the least material waste and the highest possible height. The main vertical piece suffered alterations in order to obtain the most stable curvature which would allow the structure to change diameters as its moving upwards.
