CONCEPT:

The Globule pavilion is an ephemeral architecture, placed in Park de la Alameda in Santiago de Compostela City, consists of a pneumatic structure semitransparent connected one mechanism of lighting that changes colors and size according to movement and amount of people around the pavilion.

The project aims to create a new reality within the landscape that is inserted and intrigue the viewer with its dynamism, constant metamorphic state. Add a new feature to the natural environment by creating a barrier to light, new reflections, and new colors for the landscape.

For the viewer that is inside the pavilion has the feeling of a closed environment that constantly changes shape and visions while the direct relationship with the outside and the inside according to the reflections of natural light that enters and artificial light created by the pavilion more than this the vision of the exterior as a different perspective of the world.

In order to change the reality we explored a specific pattern with to change the shape and the structure thrue the inflate and deflate system. The first approach is to study a regular grid which the form uniformly the shape.

The pattern is inspired by the cocoon structure of a urodid moth, the capsule interact with the environmet and the peoples around, like a living structure. It reflect the cocoon shape involving the people to see the world to it.

The result structure pattern is an evolution of the previous one placing balloons opening and fixed part in a specific way to obtain a specific capsule transformation.

The Capsule is composed by plastic layers melted together according to the pattern created. The structure stand up by inflating this plastic layers. The state zero is a flat sheet. Once inflated the Capsule stand up, the pattern create the structural part of the cocoon, the pipes are the load-bearing elements, the balloons true the inflation and inflation create the moment, it is a accentuated by openings and fixed parts. The air flow inside the structure four for loins according to Arduino device is possible control the aid pressure inside the capsule.

The human interaction depends about proximity and sound sensors, depending the amount of people near the Capsule the Arduino device increase the air flow inside the Capsule to two valves, in order to increase the balloons sites to change the capsule shape and make it bigger. The lights change according to the sound frequency of talking people, the colors range from cold to warm, depending to the volume the colors became warmer.

The area selected to place the Capsule is the Park de la Alameda a quite area out of the traffic to assure the interaction only with the people.

If anybody stay near the Capsule the lights are cold and the balloons are barely inflated .

When people get closer to the Capsule or two people come inside the balloon air are a little more inflated and the lights colors started to became warmer.

When the many peoples come inside the capsule and start to interact with it the balloon are inflated until the maximum value and the lights colors are warm.

“The man in the course of his space travels, needs the body messages to ensure the stability of their visual world. Not having this body information, the human being loses the connection with the world.” PALLASMAA, Juhani; The Eyes of the Skin, 1994

Our capsule is an outer skin of human, connecting him with the world, which he can interact with the shadow of sunlight or artifical light. It is an intimate space in public where he is alone by himself or with the people in intimate distance. It is the expansion of interiors into public space where he confronts the city with his body. He experiences himself in the city, and the city exists through his embodied experience. The city and his body supplement and define each other.

“Our bodies and movements are in constant interaction with the environment; the world and the self inform and redefine each other constantly.” Juhani Pallasmaa, Idem, 27

We started to our research with different types of hydrogels and the ways of interaction with the materiality. Hydrogel is a network of polymer chains that are hydrophilic. They are highly absorbent natural or synthetic polymers.

Santiago de Compostela is located in northwest Spain and is mostly known by the catholic pilgrimage route, where the final destination is the Santiago Cathedral. Each year the route brings pilgrims from all over the world.

Shel[l]ter is a capsule with the intention of connecting the pilgrims and the city in another way. The concept of a folding and portable structure came from the movement of the pilgrims and as a solution for the capsule.

Different patters were tested to understand the possibilities of creating a changeable 3D space from a flat surface. The chosen pattern is the one that showed the greater diversity of folding combined with the most interesting spaces created.

After choosing the patterns different materials were tested. The main goal was to have a light structure that the users could carry, change it’s form and that could return to the original form. from the paper the material was changed to plastic and later to cardboard connected through textile. During the process strings were attached to the model to allow it to be static in the different shapes it can be arranged.

In the big scale model some problems with the material were identified and also two ways to continue developing the project. One of them more connected to the pilgrims is to create camping tents that could they could use during their stay in Santiago de Compostela. the other one is to create an interactive urban furniture that visitors and inhabitants cloud play with creating different spaces.

For each one of the ways other materials should be studied to achieve the best performance of the capsule.

The purpose of our capsule is to capture the essence of personal space. The structure is indented to be suspended between two existing buildings within the streets of Barcelona. During our design development, we questioned how it is possible to affirm your personal space. Therefore we created a visual ‘bubble’ around the participant within a public area. By moving through the capsule, an individual’s presence is asserted as the suspended lights illuminate. By interacting with the ‘sewed like’ forms the sensors react to the sense of touch. Therefore lightens when touched and darkens disregarded.

The Forest Vibrations pavilion is based on a few key concepts related to physics, geometry, and space. There are two main outputs from the resulting proposal; first is the translation and amplification of everyday sounds of the city of Santiago de Compostela, and second is the visualization of audible sounds through their vibration within materials. The result is an instrument which outputs a sensory experience to its users through he use of an articulated roof structure. As frequencies are translated from the city, the dynamic space changes both through the disrupted perspectives of its users as well as the physical properties which are exhibited in materials when they undergo stress from vibration.

Cymatics is defined as the study of visible sound and vibration. One of the earliest examples in this field of research is the Chladni plate, which produces patterns using the modal phenomena observed in a material when it is responding to the stress of frequency. Material oscillation and the presence of nodes and anti-nodes within finite geometries has driven the physical investigations of this proposal.

Core Concepts for Research

Amplification - Our studies of amplification are to identify city sounds from which certain frequencies can be extracted. these sounds are associated to city activities at various scales including idle chatter between people, environmental sounds, traffic and noise from municipal services and industries.

Resonance – By understanding resonance we can make a relationship between the audible world and the physical world. Resonant frequencies maximize the deformation of materials, which means that there are thresholds at which certain sizes of material can be active while other sizes are static. This phenomenon can be employed both through the input of sound, or through mechanical force.

Finite Geometries – By restricting the geometry of a material to a specific length or shape, it is possible to observe a spectrum of behaviors within the same material depending on its finite geometry (ie. the lengths and profiles of their edges, their thickness or porosity). In our case, the driving variable of the height of a material has led to the development of the articulated roof of the pavilion.

Reflection – Conceptually, the notion of reflection is employed on two levels. First, the amplification and visualization of the city offers users a heightened sense of sounds and its physical properties in relation to very familiar sounds. Second, all the materials recommended for this pavilion exhibit high reflectivity (translucent acrylic for the roof, metal for the floor, and black PVC strips for the active vibrating materials). These materials, in conjunction with the raw natural surroundings and the presence of people, further the sensory disconnection from reality.

Absorption/Transference – These complementary concepts reflect the physical notion that energy cannot be destroyed, only transferred from one form to another. In this case, sound is transferred from the city, into the metallic base of the pavilion, into vibrating materials, and finally into the space and its users in the form of mechanical movement. However, when users are moving through the space, another level of interaction is introduced as their soft tissue absorbs the energy being transmitted in the base. This absorption is felt through the whole body and is enhanced by the presence of visibly static material within the zone of absorption.

Proposal Summary

This proposal outlines the design of a 5 x 5 x 3m pavilion composed of a metallic base, rigid acrylic or glass waffle-roof structure, and 750 lengths of black PVC strips, tensed vertically from the base to the roof. The roof shape is articulated such that it forms 5 different lengths of PVC by pinning it at specific heights. This derivation of height has a particular logic based on the number of members in each family and their distribution in the space, but the goal is a combined effect of randomness and familial zoning within the space.

Sensation Outside

From the outside, the pavilion is an alien. It is at odds with the environment in both its materiality and immaterial exhibited properties. The gridded distribution of vertical members inside the space simultaneously offer porosity and density depending on the viewer’s perspective, and conceptually reflect the behavior of a ‘cloud’ or forest. The material mirrors its surroundings, creating an oneiric ‘dreamscape’ through a distortion of the sky, the forest and the horizon

Sensation in the Pavilion

The pavilion interior consists of narrow paths cut out of the otherwise evenly distributed density of vertical PVC strips. Users experience a sensory detachment from reality in this oneiric space due to the distortion of the inputs of light and sound.
