There is nothing more dangerous than trying to make the world a better place. Banksy

Measuring the Social welfare has always been a hard task for planners especially when the people are to be involved in the decision making. This research has started from the macro-scale of reading about societies, governance approaches, and the link between both. After a deep research about the city of Barcelona and its districts, a disruptive program has been activated to retrofit Sant Adrià de Besòs.
SW18 is the next planning generation.

Redefining Reality
In order to determine the social welfare of a society, and justify the credibility of our formula, it is vital that we test our discovery on an existing society. The strategy was that we determine the social welfare of a society, compare the results to the data defining the image of this society, and later try to determine how our formula can be a source of change and improvement for the society. In our case, we mapped Barcelona City in terms of resources and existing facilities, applied the formula to measure the social welfare and the results were shocking. In the following chapter, we are mapping a set of facilities in Barcelona; showing how the city markets its districts according to the facilities and resources they have. Later, another set of maps defined by the Formula’s indices: Education, health, unemployment, ecological footprint indices.

Case Study: Sant Adrià de Besòs

The Inputs
Following the Bottom-up approach, we researched about the variable inputs that define the structure of the society and its problems. The idea was to create a grasshopper definition that receives live data, filters them through the formula in order to raise the social welfare index. The inputs are divided into three categories:
i. The Input of the People
ii. The existing program that was initiated to retrofit the
area
iii. The program we propose based on disruptive
innovation.

i. The Input of the People

ii. The Existing Program

There are 77 centers in La Mina Area initiated by the Generalitate Barcelona to retrofit the area.the project has started since the year 2001 and development projects are still in progress.
The themes of these centers range between 8 categories: Adminstrative, Cultural, Sports, Training, Leisure, Health, Social, and Job Orientations. The active centers are: The Library, The police station, The culture Center, the sports center, and the schools. 250 million Euros have been spent on retrofitting La Mina area, between the years 2001 and 2010, yet the social welfare is still very low and people still have the same complains as they had 10 years ago.

Case Study: Sant Adrià de Besòs
Disruptive Innovation

Zero has no power if it was not backed u with a power factor. Disruptive innovation is the power of our program. Now is the time to make the change, to be disruptive, to break the taboo. It is not about how much money we spend, it is about how people are involved in the decision making.

The Business Plan
By definition, a disruptive innovation is an innovation that unsettles an existing market and value network displacing an earlier technology. The term is used in business and technology literature to describe innovations that improve a product or service in ways that the market does not expect, typically first by designing for a different set of consumers in a new market and later by lowering prices in the existing market. In today’s economies disruptive innovation is more than ever seen as a chance to outperform existing competition. What organizations have to acknowledge is that disruptive (non-linear) changes will happen – both if they are on- board or not. Embracing disruption enables organizations to control potential risks and to grow even in highly competitive environments. This phenomenon is no longer the exception; it’s becoming the rule as category incumbents are swept aside by new entrants.

As a result, organizations should ask themselves: Should a new idea change the way you do things – or should it change the things you do? Having said that, one can only ask, what if this can be applied on societies to enhance their social welfare?
What if we translate existing functional/ innovative ideas in economy and technology into strategies to invigorate a society? In contrast to disruptive innovation, a sustaining innovation does not create new markets or value networks but rather only make existing ones evolve with better value, allowing the firms within to compete against each other’s sustaining improvements. In such a case, the similarities between markets and societies are very obvious. How many proposals can one operate in a society in order to admit the need for something different? Today’s social ‘landscapes’ are more dynamic, fast-paced and resilient than ever before. Most planners however, aren’t prepared for the challenges of leading through prolonged periods of uncertainty about the results of the disruptive innovation. Further, most programs are set-up in an aim to incentivize outlook and visibility, hence rewarding predictability and control, for example, opposite criteria of what is required to lead during disruptive times. Planning for increasing the social welfare and the implementation of proven programs/ models is not anymore an excuse for ‘stagnancy’ of societies today’s planners are increasingly becoming tomorrow’s followers.

The issue of water has long been disregarded. In a world facing serious water trouble, we cannot be blind to the forthcoming social and economical tensions over water. We propose unleashing holistic solutions in water managementand production through architecture as a means of communication. It is time to bridge the gap between water related problems and awareness. Our goal is a collaboration between experts, designers, municipalities and private companies dealing with water in order to elaborate feasible plan of action.

Why is water important?

The water-energy nexus is a term for the interrelation- ship of both water and energy. Excessive consumption of both can lead to resource depletion, pollution, and an overall increase in the price for each.

All types of electricity generation consume water either to process the raw materials used in the facility or fuel, constructing and maintaining the plant, or to just generate the electricity itself. Renewable power sources as photovoltaic solar and wind power, which require little water to produce energy, require water in processing the raw materials to build the turbines and solar panels. If a wind turbine is mounted on a concrete or steel tower, additional tonnes of water are required in the tower’s construction.

In the thermoelectric plant, about 7.6L of water is evaporated to create one kilowatt hour (kWh) of ener- gy.An average of 68 L of fresh water is evaporated to generate 1 kWh of electricity at a Hydroelectric plants. The production of electricity to power one 60W incandescent light bulb over the course of a year would evaporate about 24,000L of water.

As energy requires water, water supply and sewage disposal needs energy. Drinking water must be pumped to the treatment plant, pretreated, and then pumped to consumers. The energy consumed for pumping groundwater is typically between 537 kWh and 2,270 kWh per million gallons depending on pumping depth.

There are predictions that the need for water would double within 50 years, due to global population rise and climate change. Generally, about 1L of liquid water gets converted to water vapour to produce 1 calorie of food. Each person consume between 2,000 and 5,000 litres of water every day, depending on the diet and how the food is produced. This is far more than the 2 to 5 litres we drink every day. A heavy meat diet requires much more than a vegetarian diet, because water is used to grow food for the animals as well as being used directly to support the livestock. Economic growth fuels changes in diets; for example, per capita meat demand in China has quadrupled over the last 30 years, and milk and egg products are becoming increasingly popular in India. Growing cities, expanding industry and biofuels are increasingly competing with agriculture for water.

Building resilience

Why do we need #ECOTONE?

Freshwater

For nearly all human purposes, we need freshwater as it occurs on land. Salt water as it occurs in the ocean is not useful for drinking, washing, cooking, field irrigation or for most applications in industry. Salt water can be desalinised, but this is a costly and energy-intensive process, feasible for a limited number of applications only. Besides, salt water is available at the coast, while much of the water needs are inland, so that transport uphill becomes an issue as well. In short, humans mainly depend on freshwater as it occurs on land. Although water forms a cycle, so that freshwater on land is continuously replenished, its availability is not unlimited. Per year, people need a certain volume of water for domestic, agricultural and industrial purposes, which cannot exceed the annual replenishment rate. The major question is therefore: how much freshwater is available over a certain period and what is man’s actual appropriation of this flow in this period?

Freshwater is increasingly becoming a global resource, driven by growing international trade in water-intensive commodities. Apart from regional markets, there are also global markets for water-in- tensive goods such as crop and livestock products, natural fibres and bio-energy. As a result, use of water resources has become spatially disconnected from the consumers. This can be illustrated for the case of cotton. From field to end product, cotton passes through a number of distinct production stages with different impacts on water resources. These stages of production are often located in different places and final consumption can be in yet another place. For example, Malaysia does not grow cotton, but imports raw cotton from China, India and Pakistan for process- ing in the textile industry and exports cotton clothes to the European market. As a result, the impacts of consumption of a final cotton product on the globe’s water resources can only be found by looking at the supply chain and tracing the origins of the product.

Water, like energy, is neither created nor destroyed, but just changes its state of existence. The problems arise with the kind if usage and pollution which results in lack of availability of fresh water. The solution to the issue is more of adaptation which can be in different ways directing us towards sustainable solutions of water management. The solutions can be either Ecologically sustainable, Socially sustain- able or economically sustainable or a combination of them. and these sustainable solutions can be accomplished by adaptation to the the geography of the palace, the kind if water use patterns that socially exist and the economic standards of the society that we are catering to.

Water scarcity

Water scarcity is an increasingly frequent and worrying phenomenon that affects at least 11% of the Euro- pean population and 17% of EU territory. Since 1980, the number of droughts in Europe has increased, and they have become more severe, costing an estimated €100 billion over the past 30 years. One of the worst droughts occurred in 2003, when one-third of EU territory and over 100 million people were affected. Between 1976 and 2006, the number of people and areas hit by drought rose by almost 20%, and the yearly average cost has quadrupled. Demand for water continues to rise across Europe, putting a strain on our resources. It is estimated that some 20-40% of Europe’s available water is being wasted (leakages in the supply system, no water saving technologies installed, too much unnecessary irrigation, dripping taps etc.). In a ‘business as usual’ scenario, water consumption by the public, industry and agriculture would increase by 16% by 2030. And climate change will add to the problems of water scarcity and droughts.

Water footprint

A “water footprint” is an assessment of the amount of potable water used by an individual, community, business, or nation for outdoors irrigation and indoors. Through a Water footprint, one can learn how much water is consumed and by what. Action can then be taken to reduce water consumption from the activities with the highest impact. Low-flow aerators, toilets, and shower heads can be installed inside, while sustainable landscaping can be planted outside to reduce the need for irrigation. A Runoff footprint can be completed to assess how to sustainably reduce storm water runoff on a site, preventing it from entering the local storm water system and being treated at a waste water treatment plant.

Building resilience

This web of trade-offs and interdependencies shapes water outlook indirectly affecting even the food and energy demands and should be dealt with early and directly, rather than as an afterthought. The approach should be in searching and establishing localised solutions for water issues no as an after effect of addressing a crisis when it strikes but as a forethought. Human activities adversely affect ecosystem resilience and are increasingly causing regime shifts in ecosystems, often to less desirable and degraded conditions. Interdisciplinary discourse on resilience now includes consideration of the interactions of humans and ecosystems via socio-ecological systems, and the need for shift from the maximum sustainable yield paradigm to environmental management which aims to build ecological resilience through “resilience analysis, adaptive resource management, and adaptive governance”.

The site

The site: district 22@, also known as 22@Barcelona and Districte de la innovació (innovation district) is the corporative name given to a central business district in Barcelona’s formerly industrial area of Poblenou, in the district of Sant Martí, nick- named “the Catalan Manchester” in the 19th century. Its aim is to convert Poblenou into the city’s technological and innovation district, as well as to increase leisure and residential spaces.

The #ECOTONE tries to cross over the limitations of regular buildings. Attacking several issues of the site, the goal is to heal the urban socio-economical fabric. A place that not only acts as a learning hub for sustainability, but is able to build resilience and sustainability literacy. Our goal is a collaboration between experts, designers, municipalities and private companies dealing with water in order provide a platform where to elaborate a feasible plan of action.

“Architecture is for the people and by the people.”
Citizen+ is an initiative by a group of students from IAAC aiming at helping poeple to shape their own environments with the use of innovative ideas and digital fabrication. These initial urban interventions revolve around District@22 and makes use of IAAC facilities, thereby dissolving IAAC into the community. The project makes a clear statement for the future of the community i.e. tailor made situations for local problems, locally produced. The students conclude by saying that if each student at Iaac takes up an intervention we could bring about a change in the society.

PROJECT

The current situation in the construction industry is disorganized and controlled by few individuals with power and money , but we as innovators should lead the industry and bring innovation directly to the user eliminating the “ middle-men ” thereby making the process more localized as well as efficient in terms of cost and time. Now , its time to give power to the people .

Innovation is not an invention. Its a new way of tackling well-known challenges. Innovation does not necessarily mean technological advancement alone , it is also ideas of dealing with social and economical challenges .

Lets take a look at few examples:

Unlike the past, today people are empowered to make and implement their own choices and not depend on a few magnates of the industrial world to make choices for them. For example giant industries like, hotels & hospitality and publishing have been sidetracked by initiatives like Air BNB, open desk , Amazon etc. they give more power back to hands of the people. Likewise the Ivy leagues universities which was restricted to a limited section of society had now made its resources available online for public and thus promoting “democratization of knowledge”.

Through our project , we bring about the same changes in the field of architecture .

Traditionally the practise of architecture has been portrayed as commodity for the elite but it as a humanitarian profession it should be made accessible to all . Architecture is for the people by the people .Being a part of this innovation hub facilitated with digital fabrication and being a citizen by virtue of contribution , we felt it was our duty to democratize the knowledge / innovation that is being generated behind these closed doors. Therefore, we went out to the streets, listened to the needs of the people and located various weak spots that needed improvement either socially , technologically or economically. With our expertise and engaging resources at our institution, we came up with interventions that help to improve these weak spots and creates bond which in turn reduces the gap between the institute and the community to which it is currently unknown.

Voice of the people plays an critical role in understanding societal needs which aids in taking informed decisions. Therefore we started out by listening to the ppl in the community . For this we developed and conducted a playful survey and learned what people like and don’t like about their neighbourhood. We found that what they like the most are open spaces while most of the dislike the fact that there aren’t many people or shops in the neighbourhood.

After our research and survey we made a database of profiles and various possible interventions some of which we have executed.

ECONOMIC INTERVENTIONS

The community expressed their concerns about the lack of shops in the “barrio” but we found many existing shops with huge investments, but under utilized due to lack of customers. So we tried to create a win-win scenario for both groups. Here is one such example.

SOCIAL INTERVENTIONS

Remember the community said they Love neighbourhood but dislikes the fact there aren’t many people… well we tried to take advantage of urban voids and transform them into active spaces for the community and knit the people together.

TECHNOLOGICAL INTERVENTIONS

Technology has become an inevitable part of people’s lives , hence it is important to educate them about the new developments and their effects especially in the field of production/manufacture. In the past industrial era mass production of a prototype was the “way-to-go” which brought in problems of its own like shipping and transportation, unnecessary waste generation due to overproduction or rather under consumption of incompatible designs etc. Today, we have the technology to design and fabricate precisely to and for our needs, locally. To convey this message to laymen we went into private spaces with the prototypes developed using such technologies at our institute making them a part of the third Industrial Revolution and giving power into their hands . Thereby eliminating physical and virtual barriers and granting access to everyone .

FUTURE SCENARIO

Citizen + introduces a new model society that is driven by transparency. It is an open society where individuals have easy public access to anything and are confronted with personal decisions.

We have initiated this process through this user friendly website, where the students of IAAC as well as the people of the community can upload profile of their ideas and campaign for crowdfunding to execute them with the use of digital fabrication technologies. This concept could be practiced in our very institute where every year around 150 students come with their expertization and varied cultural background . So , just imagine if every student executes an project then the result is overwhelming .

150 interventions being executed in a span of a year just by ONE institute .

If this idea is accepted and multiplied then the result would be unimaginable : AN REVOLUTION

Its time to PAY IT FORWARD …..

If in the future this practice is widened to a global level it will Empower the people .

We will have a society driven by transparency, therefore becoming an open society where individuals are confronted with personal decisions and are allowed free easy public access.

The KATA project is a direct response to pressing issues of Methane Release, harshening climatic conditions and scarce life resources for nomads in Mongolia.

For centuries nomadic families have depended on the vast lands of Mongolia to provide them and their livestock with sufficient amount of food and water. However, the past decade has proven this tradition to be no longer viable. Global Warming and its harsh effects on the Mongolian environment are to blame.

Almost half of Mongolia’s 3 million population are migrating nomads, that move to a new location seasonally once the soil of current settlement was depleted of its natural resources. The rapidly worsening environmental conditions have drastically reduced the chances of finding a new favourable for living land at once, thus forcing nomads to abandon historically formed customs of living in the wild and move to the peripheries of polluted cities in hopes of finding means for survival.

What neither the suffering nomads nor the moderately content city dwellers are aware of are the effects that Global Warming has on their entire existence and not only convenience of daily life. The gigantic silent atomic bomb that our planet has yet to become aware of is residing under the vast lands of the most breathtaking valleys and mountains of Mongolia: the Methane Bomb.

A deep layer of frozen biomass, permafrost, has been releasing unimaginably large quantity of methane gas into the atmosphere, putting our population in danger due to its flammable and explosive characteristics. If addressed immediately, this problem might be alleviated and furthermore, turned into a source of seemingly endless source of renewable energy.

The KATA Initiative is a comprehensive response to the Methane crises currently riveting Mongolian lands. The main pillars of KATA are:

METHANE EXTRACTION

\\ safe extraction of Methane from the depth of Permafrost through trees, that are biologically predefined as Methane digesters. Mongolian lands house several typologies of trees and shrubs that take in Methane through their roots and pass it into the atmosphere

TRAPPING METHANE

\\ if covered with extremely lightweight zeolite containing nano fabric ( polymer/aluminium alloy based material), the particles of methane will immediately attach to its surface driven by the chemical properties of both components. In such a way an extremely volatile gas becomes tangible and allows for numerous handling options, transportation being one of them.

TRANSPORTING METHANE

\\ once the gas is translated into a mere layer of particles on a provided surface it can also be rearranged into a different chemical setup, yet again changing its physical properties. Enriched with zeolites, methane obtains an additional atomic mass of the zeolite grain, thus becoming a finite sand-like substance that will not escape into the atmosphere.

TRANSPORTING WITH B-DRONES

\\ Methane collecting drones are part of the transportation system of the KATA Initiative. Several drone typologies have been designed to collect, transport to the storage facilities as well as deliver methane to the research and development centres of KATA’

STORAGE OF METHANE

\\ the drone’s trunk is packed with methane molecules which are later transported to the receiver -airport. The assembly of the airport predefines its form. At first, methane pockets are located in the soil, then porous rubber-based material is “inflated” into the ground, fully encapsulating floating methane. Shape memory polymer, enriched with numerous zeolites, is later poured into the newly formed cavity. Thus, the airports form is not invasive or harmful towards the surrounding soils and serves as a porous environment into which drones bring methane gas for prolonged storage.

METHANE RESEARCH

\\ due to its chemical properties, methane gas containing less than 40% of impurities, can be used as clean burning energy instantaneously or stored for later applications at the methane airport. If the gas contains more than 40% of other volatile particles, it will be transported to the research centre, where its main application is targeted towards purification research and educational purposes of the local communities.

A public center will manage and develop the system of KATA project. The design is based on trees, as the trees are used as main construction. The facade is a double membrane of zeolite fabric, which protects the center for the harsh weather.

The center is growing with the trees, as the system grow.

THE SYSTEM IN A GAME

\\The nomads are the main drivers of the system. As method of education we published a game to understand the pillars in the system:

METHANE ENERGY APPLICATION

\\ local extraction, purification and advancement of methane research are the bare minimum applications that KATA Initiative will provide the nomad community with. Instant clean source of energy will be delivered by the gets and surrounding cities by sustainable drone transportation system. The much needed source of energy that Mongolia has been striving for is at last given to its people.

The KATA Initiative is not a profit-oriented corporation, but rather a collective of like-minded scientists who aim at transforming the potential world-scale catastrophe to a source of life for the struggling Mongolian society. The minimal scale intervention will begin nearby the northern city Ulaangum, servicing both the migrating nomads and the urban dwellers. The KATA Initiative will later be implemented in other methane-rich Mongolian territories. With the advancement of technologies and continuous input from the world intelligence methane gas will slowly become a driving force for prosperous life inside and outside of the Mongolian borders.

Today, there are 19 countries with very high risk of social unrest according to a study by the Economist Intelligence unit.

Is the top-down governance including the society in its policy formulation?
WE THINK NOT…

We understand that the global discussion must move beyond market incentives and governmental sanctions, codes and standards.
In order to address the triple threat of economic crisis, energy security, and climate change, we must rethink human nature itself and redefine the meaning of the human journey.

So how is the society performing on the level of economy, ecology and social equity statuses?

The quality of education in Spain ranks 4th from below in the EU and highest dropout rate from schools. On the other hand, scientific production in Barcelona was ranked 10th in the world, and 21.6% of the Spanish innovative companies are Catalan.

On the level of energy, Spain has the 5th highest consumption rate in EU, whereby 26% of which go to houses, and only 4% of the produced energy is renewable.

In order to find the relations and the common variables forming the society, we decided to measure social welfare with a formula.
According to our research, the components: health, education, ecological footprint and employment had critical conditions in Barcelona and were drastically modifying the relations. We therefore considered them as the ingredients of the formula.

Because not every aspect revolves around money, and because people are the drivers of change on the level of economy, ecology, and geopolitics, we used an unconventional index: TIME.

After this formula we start to ask ourselvs what if we could increase education, or how about we could improve ecological foot print, how this changes will affect the formula results in our matrix.

After all this we start to think in a community that will introduces viruses to the people, spreading knowledge.

LymphoCity is a pilot project based on sharing, investing in talents, empathy and technology. The manifesto of this city is based on re-measuring the four pillars of the formula. For education, Self organized learning system will be the scheme’s foundation. For health, the basis are efficiency and just through controlling daily habits and consumptions through urban farming. The loop effect in consumption reducing, refurbishing, recycling…results in higher efficiency. For ecology, 3D printing medicine and customized mobility. In economy, product service capital and redistribution markets results in the consumers loosing the urge of ownership and trust will make the system successful through reputation capitals, which are the social capital in Lymphocity. This will also result in higher investments and less wealth gaps.

‘There is nothing more dangerous than someone who wants to make the world a better place’ Banksy

So the idea of our community is not actually a Utopia which is usually idealistic and unrealistic, rather take the essence of innovation in the societies and try to mold our own. This allows the evolution of this community with time and needs of its inhabitants, Innovation is a progressive phenomena.

The program of the lymphoCity is based on 5 cells: Living cell, balance cell, management cell, learning cell and producing cells.

This is a short story about a typical day in Lymphocity ”Yesterday I was invited to LymphoCity. So I parked my car outside and grabbed a bicycle to enter. First impression I had was how fun the environment is; people were reading in gardens, children were playing, exhibitions outdoors, music, harmonious with nature, was inspiring everybody. So I met my friend next to the basketball court and we went for lunch in the common room. There, everybody was preparing their food which they harvested from the urban farms in the morning. We had our vegetarian meal and went for a tour. The education cell was next to his private bedroom and next to it was the research lab where he was downloading the recipe for his afternoon medicine. Later, his son joined us and told us about his knowledge hub self organized experience along with a group of his mates. Then his phone rang to alarm him that his energy consumption at his room was exceeding limit. The alarm was sent by the management tower that was right behind us…”

Climate change.
We have all heard of it.The news, the political campaigns, the NGO’s make sure you hear enough of it.And we think we know what its about. Greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, water vapour, methane. And we know about the effects too. More than that, we feel the effects. The hot days, floods, abnormal weather behaviours.
But what do we do about it other than intaking information? We recycle, pay attention to our purchases, plant a tree and then we call ourselves informed and involved.
We are not angry enough.

Do we realise that the effects of climate change are catastrophic ? Do we truly understand what the effects of constant heat waves are? Or how the flash floods pollute our water and spread diseases? Never in history have such severe draughts been recorded, as it has in the past 10 years. The earth will survive this, but we might not.

We will run out of water before we run out of air. What will happen when fresh water is so scarce that it will become the new oil? It is easy to ignore this issue when we are stuck in our heads living our present lives. Little do we know that before water completely runs out, private compa- nies will own the small amount that is left. Imagine a world where private water companies own your thirst, where you cannot afford the minimum water amount for your body to function normally. Do you know what happens to your body when it becomes dehydrated? As dehydration progresses, nausea and vomiting may be experienced and by 5% reduction in total body weight, performance has dropped by 30%. Fluid losses greater than this lead to coma and death.

When you took a shower today, it has not crossed your mind once that one day what you are doing will become a luxury and for some, just a dream. The level of comfort you are in right now allows you to think of tap water as unclean and you wouldn’t even dream to drink it.

Living in Barcelona you get a feeling that there is plenty of everything for everyone. But make time and take a look at water. While the entire earth is covered with water in proportion of 75%, only 1% is safe to drink. Out of that 1%, we use 70% just for irrigation in agriculture. At the end of your research you will find that only 0.007% of the worlds water is ready to be used by humans. And we are going through it rapidly.
The Mediterranean basin is suffering. A fast process of desertification and severe droughts affect the rivers, the agriculture and in the end, the economy. It got so bad that in 2008 Barcelona had to ship in water from France.

What happened then is only a short intro into the dystopian future that awaits us.

The most common chemicals used for cloud seeding include silver iodide and dry ice (solid carbon dioxide). Liquid propane, which expands into a gas, has also been used. This can produce ice crystals at higher temperatures than silver iodide. The use of hygroscopic materials, such as table salt, is becoming more popular after promising research.
Dry ice or propane expansion cools the air to such an extent that ice crystals can nucleate spontaneously from the vapor phase. Unlike seeding with silver iodide, this spontaneous nucleation does not require any existing droplets or particles because it produces extremely high vapor supersaturations near the seeding substance. However, the existing droplets are needed for the ice crystals to grow into large enough particles to precipitate out.

In mid-latitude clouds, the usual seeding strategy has been based on the fact that the equilibrium vapor pressure is lower over ice than over water. The formation of ice particles in super cooled clouds allows those particles to grow at the expense of liquid droplets. If sufficient growth takes place, the particles become heavy enough to fall as precipitation from clouds that otherwise would produce no precipitation. This process is known as “static” seeding Seeding of warm-season or tropical cumulonimbus (convective) clouds seeks to exploit the latent heat released by freezing. This strategy of “dynamic” seeding assumes that the additional latent heat adds buoyancy, strengthens updrafts, ensures more low-level convergence, and ultimately causes rapid growth of properly selected clouds.

Cloud seeding chemicals may be dispersed by aircraft or by dispersion devices located on the ground (generators, as in first figure, or canisters fired from anti-aircraft guns or rockets). For release by aircraft, silver iodide flares are ignited and dispersed as an aircraft flies through the inflow of a cloud. When released by devices on the ground, the fine particles are carried downwind and upward by air currents after release.
An electronic mechanism was tested in 2010, when infrared laser pulses were directed to the air above Berlin by researchers from the University of Geneva. The experimenters posited that the pulses would encourage atmospheric sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide to form particles that would then act as seeds.

-About nature photonics —>

Firing extremely powerful laser pulses through humid air can stimulate the formation of clouds.
The effectiveness of this method is much easier to gauge than traditional cloud-seeding techniques and that it could provide a practical means of triggering rainfall.

Filaments of light
Seeding clouds using laser beams. To demonstrate this idea a portable Teramobile infrared laser was used with beam pulses lasting just 10–13 s and a power of 5 × 1012 W. Such pulses are intense enough to modify the refractive index of air, which causes the beam to focus itself. This further increases the intensity, producing fila- ments of light that are intense enough to ionize the air and initiate condensa- tion.
The researchers fired the laser into both the atmosphere and into a controlled environment – a cloud chamber filled with ambient air. In both cases they illuminated the trajectory of the beam with a second, lower-powered laser, which would experience greater scattering if more droplets were present.
The scattering of the second laser increased each time a pulse from the first laser was fired. They observed this pattern in over 900 laser flashes, providing, they say, a clear proof of the pulsed laser’s cloud seeding capability that cannot be established for traditional seeding techniques.
Sweeping the beam
A more powerful laser will probably need to be developed to take advantage of a sweeping effect that they have noted – that ionization continues for a few seconds after the laser has stopped flashing and so by sweeping the beam it should be possible to seed a larger volume of air.
More importantly, the researchers need to establish the physics behind the effect in order to know how to optimize the laser’s wavelength, pulse duration and other parameters. There is certaintu that the ions in the laser-induced plasma contribute to condensation but also believed that condensation might occur on molecules of sulphuric acid and nitric acid, which are formed when electrons from the plasma generate the OH radical that then oxidiz- es sulphur dioxide and nitrogen, respectively.

What can we do?
Firstly a deeper understanding of water is overdue.Taking shorter showers and not being wasteful will not suffice. We are completely oblivious to the water footprint that our food, clothes and products. To produce 1L of bottled water, 87L of water go into it. 1kg of chocolate is 24.000L of water because of the production of sugar, cocoa beans and transportation.
Secondly, as water is essential for life, it should be a human right. Fighting the privatisation of water and raising awareness is a first step to changing our behaviour.

What can architecture do?
We are already aware that construction is the number one cause for global warming, followed by food production and transportation. So the entire industry is responsible for changing their mindset and way of doing things.
Following Jeremy Rifkins 5 pillars, buildings should stop being an object of consumption, but a factory that is not only able to sustain itself but even gives back to the community.

Applying techniques like solar desalination or rainwater filtration is not new. Solar desalination is used since the 4th century b.c. by Aristotle. But combining different systems that work together in a particular context on a large scale will be able to convert seawater, collect water from the atmosphere and provide for itself and more.
But the production of clean water is not enough.A process of awareness is necessary. There is a need of a place to not just learn about water, but experrience it. A meeting point for scientists, children and activists. A building where the cycle of water and the cycle of people interact and merge.
Such a place of knowledge is a true FACTORY OF THE FUTURE.

This is not a building, it is a seed. It will spread and share knowledge throughout the planet. Whatever works for us here in Barcelona might not be applicable in Peru, but we can share the systems and the techniques and the tool to adapt.

The only way to attack the problem of the blue gold is by acting on all levels of society.Within the industry, the politics, the economy and socially.

Barcelona has undergone tremendous changes in past few decades in becoming world’s most admired city for urban development. Leveraging on 1992 Olympics it transformed from a neglected industrial city to vibrant hub for business, logistics and tourism. By 2001, the city was ranked as the Europe’s sixth most attractive city for international business investment and was 3rd by 2012. The economy however, has benefitted much from its attractiveness as the 4th best urban tourism destination in Europe. With an inflow of 7.8 million tourist and 2.3 billion Euros, the tourism industry has both positive and negative influence on the city and its inhabitants.

As from our research we found that the city has now geared up towards becoming a capital of knowledge and innovation by attracting talent from around the globe. With 12 universities, 169 research centers, 30 innovation support etc. there is a lot of innovation happening within the city. But does all this reach or benefit the citizens? Our own institute(IAAC) which thrives on innovation and brings 120 students from around the world is much like a bubble in the city without any interaction at the neighborhood level.

Innovation is of the essence to progress and Interaction is KEY to innovation. The Ajuntament de Barcelona, realized this and took measures to improve and increase the interactions between the international community and the local firms and institutions in Barcelona which resulted in 22@District or the Innovation District. But any innovative strategy ,device, technology or service is meaningless unless it leads to the betterment of the society or community it is based in.

Our project therefore attempts to bring innovators from different walks of life irrespective of their nationality together to interact, innovate and find solutions to existing/foreseen problems. Barcelona today, with its multi-cultural society, myriad tourists, international student and research community has a vast pool of skills, experience and knowledge at any point of time. This potential needs to be tapped.

To make any “outsider” interested in the progress of the city he/she should identify oneself with the city of Barcelona. Our study thus lead us to re-define “citizen” as a person who has some contribution towards progress of the city. Thus making all those who do any productive work (which includes temporary residents like international researchers/ students/ entrepreneurs etc) a citizen of Barcelona. But what about tourist? The locals often look at them as nuisance but they too have skills and expertise in one field or the other. What if we could tap these skill too and ameliorate this situation for the locals?

Our proposal is to define spaces where all this potential can be tapped through interaction with the local community as well as research & innovation facilities in a way that is directly beneficial to the local community and thus reduce the friction between permanent and temporary occupants of this city.

” Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.”

These people are from outside Barcelona, but much like citizens, they too have made Barcelona their (temporary) home; living and working or learning in the city.

Therefore we conducted a study on a similar international community in the city ie; the IAAC community. The study had two parts.
The first part consisted of a self study of the daily activities of our group members, and each activity was put into two groups that is one done by citizen or a tourist based on its nature. The second one was an analysis of the movement of the IAAC community where GPS tracks were collected and visualizations were made using grasshopper. It was carried out with voluntary participation of our fellow colleagues. The data was recorded on mobile device app . From the analyzes the type of mobility of the user can be detected . From the data we can analyze the nodes of maximum , minimum movement and their path . Most of them would pass by touristic zone , but it was just a transition point .

The activities was filmed for a day from 8am to 10pm. The blue indicates the citizen level and orange the tourist level. The study indicates that we are indeed citizens.

Innovation is meaningless unless it leads to the betterment of the society or community it is based in. But if one represents the traditional process of innovation as a Pyramid, there the is a huge gap between innovators (at the top) and the end users (at the bottom). For innovation to actually get to the users it has to filter through many layers of industries. But industries themselves are disorganized and controlled by few individuals with power and money. As innovators and architects we have the opportunity to align these industries towards a common goal of progress. We must make efforts to reduce the gap between innovators and users so that there is a positive interaction between them which will undoubtedly result in better solutions for end users and in turn creates a profitable market for the innovators. Therefore we must take innovation straight to the neighborhood level, from there to the city level and then to the global level. Our project initiates this new process of innovation in the neighborhoods of @22 district Barcelona which is known as the innovation district of Spain.

Our proposal is a system of a linked urban acupuncture. It consists of 3 levels of intervention . These are : the main hub , community hub and the pods .

A detailed study on District 22 led to the locations of interventions.

Iaac was chosen as the location for the main hub as it is located centrally in the district and offers the ideal environment for innovation to take place.

Community hub 1 is located the selected are as it is a place where diverse activities such as professional, commercial and leisure are taking place on a daily basis . It is also easily accessible from Diagonal .

The second site is located in the center of a residential area and with this we want to involve the inhabitants in the innovation program.

The third one is situated in Parc del Poblenou adjacent to the beach and sport facilities this way attracting all groups of people including tourists .

The pods are strategically positioned in public spaces selected according to the density of people.

The following images represent the logic behind the approach to our proposal and not necessarily the actual physical space.

The main hub’s objective is to create an ideal environment to foster innovation . The built structure is conceived as a transparent mesh which would grow over the existing industrial building to accommodate the new activities .

Aimed at providing a platform for local interaction where people of all ages could come together and exchange, develop and implement ideas. Temporary exhibition spaces , start up spaces (offices), shops , lounge , media access point , skill development classes , media access .
A digital window on local life, nAutreville offers visitors and local residents the opportunity to superimpose the digital city over the physical city creating a heightened vision of the surrounding environment

Aimed at providing information to the public about the various activities being held at the main hub and community level. It is strategically located in public spaces at different junctures across the city so as to give media access to everyone including tourists.
It sets out to create a new digital service for urban areas, combining both the real and the virtual city – this can disseminate information and facilitate the sharing of systems between people, in public. The beauty of this innovative system is the potential to create individual local networks, tailored to the users’ needs and personal interests.
nAutreville functions as an interactive sign which can centralise neighbourhood information (town hall, school, street map, services, history of the city, etc.).

Methane. The most dangerous greenhouse gas of all times.

It is hidden in frozen permafrost in the tundra at the nothern hemisphere. Until now, it has not been seen as the biggest environmental problem. But during the global rise of the temperature, humanity have a serious problem, which we in short time has to deal with. The permafrost is melting and the trapped methane can be released within a very short time and have the effect on the planet as 400.000 atomic bombs. The KATA project is a rescue program dealing with a unexposed problem, methane. The project will start to retrofit Mongolia, which is where the methane first will attack the environment.

CHAPTER 01 – METHANE BOMB

METHANE IS CREATED BY A BACTERIA

A particle of carbon meets energy, which is hydrogen, and adds up to an extremely small atomic mass. Methane is formed in some enzymic chemical reactions, but most of all through the metabolism of a bacteria- the metanogen- that lives in no oxygen conditions- anaerobic.

IT LIVES IN NO OXYGEN CONDITIONS

The bacteria procreates in the soil where animals’ and plants’ remains are breaking down. This condensed soil is found underneath the lakes and in the tundra- the permafrost.

WHAT IS PERMAFROST?

Permafrost is the soil below the freezing point of water 0 degrees celcius for two or more years.

MEASURING METHANE

To understand the methane production we made a prototype, where we were measuring 8 different types of human waste. The experiment was during one month, and showed that plants were creating the biggest amount of methane.

SO HOW IS METHANE RELEASED

The methane is not only transferred directly from the soil, it is also transfered through the plants. The plants absorb CO2 and the bacteria produce more methane.

When the permafrost is melting methane is released. The plants works as chimneys

METHANE INTO THE ATMOSPHERE

Higher temperature means that, the permafrost is melting and methane particles is released. The particles rise fast into the atmosphere

The methane is trapped in the atmosphere for 12 years. Methane is a greenhouse gas, and traps 34 times more heat per mass than CO2. With no oxygen, the methane will stay in the atmosphere. But the methane react with oxygen over 12 years and becomes CO2. The CO2 stays in the stratosphere for 100 years. In that way methane is a much more powerful greenhouse gas, than CO2.

GLOBAL CYCLE

The global temperature is rising. Positive feedbacks makes the rise of the global temperature grow faster. A positive feedback is not positive on the climate – it is the opposite. There are 4 different positive feedbacks.

1. Melting arctic

The ice is reflecting the heat. But now the ice is melting, so the water absorbs more heat. This mean a higher global temperature

2. Disappearing of Amazons

The Amazon is disappearing. This means that less trees absorb CO2. This mean that trees send less moisture into the air. This mean a higher global temperature

3. Clogging sink

The ocean absorb a big amount of CO2. But the plankton grows slower with higher temperature. This mean a higher global temperature

4. Melting permafrost

The melting of permafrost release a big amount of methane. And the methane turns into CO2. This mean a higher global temperature.

When the feedback works together, the temperature will rise much more quickly.

THE HUMANS EMISSION OF METHANE

We made an interactive map which show the human emission of methane. The map is connected to instant data from the internet. The maps shows, that the amount of methane release has been increased from 2006 until 2013.

The biggest amount of methane is released from the agriculture and fossil fuel extraction

BUT WHERE IS OUR REAL ENEMY?

Where is the biggest concentration of methane. Is from the humans in city? Or is it the nature?

If you take the same area of Barcelona and the Tundra. Their emission of methane is the same. But the tundra is about to change, and will soon release much more, when the permafrost melts.

In Mongolia the methane has increased dramatically. So this is where the “enemy” is now.

WHAT IS THE CONSEQUENCES?

The predictions of methane level in the atmosphere says, that we are in the grey line (see diagram below). But actually we are in the blue line.

Methane is a 25 times more strong greenhouse gas than co2. But a timeperiod of 20 years it is 85 times stronger.

If the methane is released in a spike, the consequences will be catastrophic. This will be equivalent to 400.000 atomic bombs. This will happen, if the global temperature will rise so fast, as the predictions says. And actually the predictions have until now been too optimistic.

We know that the enemy hides in the nature. The biggest enemy is now Mongolia. The vision is to retrofit whole Mongolia.

40 % of the population of Mongolia is nomadic. The nomadic is the key to clean Mongolia from the methane in the ground. Using the continuos movements of the nomadics, it is possible within a short time to cover whole Mongolia.

The first place to attack is where the biggest amount of permafrost is in Mongolia and where we can help the dying cities.

Methane is changed into methanol, so that i can be used as fuel and as new power for electricity.
