Our group developed a 3D architectural object using Rhinoceros 3D and thanks to Vuforia and Unity 3D  has created an Augmented reality platform.

PHASES:

1. Create a 3dModel using Rhinoceros 3D

2. Import the file into Unity3D and set all the textures

3. Set the ARCamera as well as the Image target using the Vuforia Tool set

a)Select the site of Torre Baro from google earth and save the image, keeping the pin and scale on the lower left bottom visible.

a) Bring the image into rhino by using the command picture frame and place the image in rhino.

a)Mark the point on the picture frame.

a) Draw a line over the scale, draw another line for 59m from the same start point. Scale with reference to the line.

a) Use the command Earth Anchor Point to mark the latitude and longitude of the point and mark the point.

a) Put the tab SURFACE on grasshopper and Right click on the SURFACE tab and click SET ONE SURFACE, go to rhino and select the surface.

a) Now in grasshopper, put POINT and a PANEL  and right click the panel and name it geo reference.

b) Put the tab DIVIDE SURFACE  and connect it to the SURFACE  tab.

a) Add a value to U and V components of DIVIDE SURFACE by adding a PANEL and inserting a value into it.

b) Go to GHowl and add the command XYZ TO GEO and connect XYZ to the POINT tab, GEO to the PANEL and P of  XYZ TO GEO to DIVIDE SURFACE.

a) Put the GET ELEVATION tab on grasshopper.

b) Connect GET ELEVATION to XYZ TO GEO  and add  a PANEL to GET ELEVATION.

a) Right click on the PANEL and click on STREAM CONTENTS  and save the file as a .*txt file.

a) Add a READ FILE tab

b) Right click on the READ FILE tab and select SET ONE FILE PATH and choose the .*txt file saved before.

a) Add a UNIT Z tab.

b) Connect the UNIT Z tab to the READ FILE.

c) Add a MOVE tab and connect geometry to points and motion(T) to UNIT Z.

d) Add the DELAUNAY MESH .

a) In the DELAUNAY’S MESH connect the points to the geometry(G) of MOVE and add the tab SURFACE FROM MESH, connect the count(U) to the panel added before. The terrain surface is created.

a) The final model with site on the google earth terrain looks like this. The height had to be corrected in rhino file to place it exactly on the google earth terrain.

Step 1 – Identifying Project Site and Basic Terrain Modeling

Project location was found on Google Earth and marked with one point (containing latitude and longitude). After making Google Earth view from above as flat as possible (with typing R on keyboard) image was saved.

This JPEG image was then imported in Rhino (in meter units) with command  _Picture Frame. Image was scaled according to Google Earth scale ruler to match real world size. Making terrain from this flat surface was done using Grasshopper definition and gHowl plug-in. Basic inputs in definition were underlay surface, xyz reference points and geo reference points. Elevation values are then taken from Google with Get Elevation component.

Step 2 – Modelling Current State of Project

One part of Geometry was modeled using Grasshopper and Kangaroo plug-in in order to simulate physical behavior. This consisted of inflating balloons with air pressure and colliding them with different disposition of solid cylinders. Variations of this process were baked and then used in Rhino to model other parts of the project. Adding other parts of project mainly consisted of connecting points on these meshes to square grid of points on the ground using _Line and _Sweep command. After finishing modeling, materials were made and applied on components. For upper part image was added as color bitmap to give texture.

Step 3 – Geolocation

Same point in Rhino which is used as reference x,y,z point in process of making terrain using gHowl, was used now as _EarthAnchorPoint, with same latitude and longitude. After this command only project geometry was selected and exported as KMZ file. This file is then opened in Google Earth showing model on anchored location. Only problem that occurred is material representation that doesn’t show any transparency.
