Through this scanning we have come to a context-specific design proposal, where we have tried to simulate the roman fractals on our assigned lot. This information source was important for us to state our attempt to come to a processing script that is more than just an algorithm for itself or a formal game per se. This way, this advanced digital tool became a tool that provides the notion of belongings and translates the geological identity of the context into a design proposal.

The theoretical basis of our proposal comes from our shared interest in the interdisciplinary urban design and planning direction: Landscape urbanism. Where the perception of the traditional urban park that has been planned by mechanistic zoning plans, is freed from its fences and borders, and the idea of designing the nature stems.

An Australian landscape architect states “landscape is the infrastructure of the future.” We know that a transportation infrastructure is more than a highway, but a linear point of attraction for commercial and industrial activities. We know that landscape is a medium to construct the networks of transportation infrastructures. So how do we take this landscape urbanist idea of greening cities forward?

What if landscape itself provides an alternate layer of infrastructure in which we cultivate, produce, and transport? The aim is to attract agriculture based industry along this sublayer of green infrastructure so that we provide a context-specific productive landscape.

Consumer economy takes a great deal for granted, wanting things for free, and is constituently unable to pay for them; This is at the root of the economic crisis Europe has been facing since 2008.

Since the crash, the financial crisis is the normal consequence of a system that can’t work the way it is structured. The only real solution is to completely re-think our culture of consumption

The recent financial crisis has caused many people to ask fundamental questions about the way the economy is organized.

The money that derives the world today doesn’t really exist; it’s the result of endless looping debt created by banks. This economic growth has turned humankind into an agent of extinction

It’s most shocking to know that Government’s debt in devolved countries approaching a peak of 200 years.

In the project we presented a different future to Castelli, and the growth or Rome city, This Alternative was the main stream of the society in Israel during the 1950-1970 and is called Kibutz.

The Kibutz people built different society based on values such as- self-sufficiency, Agriculture and socialism.

Our alternative suggestion for Castelli is based on similar ideas- Bottom Up solutions, Gradual growth, and Socialism.

In this image we present our view for the very fast future, where those “non consuming cells” will start to flourish all over the area

There must a better future for us!

How Do We Develop Urban Farming Before Density Increases?

This project aims to challenge the accepted process of urban development by proposing a system that encourages urban growth without threatening agricultural production.

Paranoia

The people of Castelli ought to get ready what’s coming! The word around Rome is it’s time to expand and their rural neighbor is looking rather attractive with its existing ease of access, rich villas, and dominating fields of production. More and more people with full wallets and empty stomachs will be great for Castelli! Then friends will tell friends about this beautiful new suburb close to Rome but cheaper, and more and more and even more people will move to Castelli.

But where will all these people build their homes and cafes and grocery stores and schools? Will they threaten the the robust production that currently relies on its sprawling agricultural fields? Before you know it, Rome will have a competitive cityscape adjacent to its fading border. Homes will become towers and productive vineyards will be striped down to ornamental greenery on balconies and roofs.

Unless…

Could we free up some of the landscape by dynamically stacking the production fields? It would be like using localized agricultural squares to attract newcomers to planned spaces before density forces Castelli to limit or eradicate green space. How do we develop urban farming before density increases?

Our society is going into an absurd direction. On one hand we consume and consume – and therefore we need more and more production. On the other hand there is even more produced than actually consumed. And in the end what is left is trash – tons of trash. But what happens with all that waste? Where is it going?

So far Castelli seems like a harmonic site at the edge of Rome where suburban and agricultural area merge. But there is already a mismatch. Agricultural production is there to feed the city of Rome while the trash is emerging from there, being piled up in landfills around the belt.

We tried to imagine what might happen if we keep going on like this. We created a future where the waste is not abandoned anymore but embraced. We abused a Processing script to bring the trash to life and let it grow by itself. The script generated an independent structure that would take over the site of Castelli.

Everything turns sooner or later into trash, even buildings. But why not going the other way around? Can the trash have another life again? Can it create a new habitat, a new urban structure? If we cannot change our habits, can we maybe live with the results?

Habitable Laboratory

As you can see nowadays, all the big cities in the world are facing the same problem which is the rapid growth our urban infrastructure which create “urban sprawl”.

We believe that in the future, all agriculture landscape in Castelli will be occupied by this urban sprawl too. We would like to propose the concept of how can city and agriculture can grow and merge together at the same time while still keep producing same amount of product or even more. Our question is “How can the city define itself as a high performance laboratory for agriculture”

By using the method of Spider-Web Bio-mimic which has the initial sense of “habitat, producing and consuming”. We create the Spider Web that can connect between global scale to micro scale, from city-city, city-building, building-building, building-urban furniture. By avoiding to destroy all heritage buildings in Castelli, we integrate by using Spider Web that work as multi-channel of water, soil, light and air to grow laboratory agriculture in suitable Micro Climate that can grow all type of plants all over the year and besides of the much amount of agriculture production, we believe that our proposal will create the new social interaction into this territory and improve the life of Castelli’s citizens.

Over population and mass consumption has created a major problem concerning the production of the human demands. The massive production of crops is causing degradation in the productive land, making it less productive every year. Can populated settlements attract arable land ? Using a circle packing script in Processing software we were able to create the attraction points. While combining it with Amira, medical scientists software which is used to 3d model MRI scans of the human body, using the frames of the animation we were able to simulate a volume creating the density of the attracted points. This is a good example of combining two different software that are used for different purposes for this exercise to make an urban/architectural analysis. The concept of arable cathedrals consists of attracting productive land forming a cross that represents the historical and religious background of Rome. The attracting points surrounds the settlements in Castelli to create a connection between the human footprint and the nature.

Axial production (in this case) will save space and have more area for production and at the same time will make an interactive and dynamic environment for the users to live in balance with nature. The plan for Rome 2025 is to sustain productive land leaving a scope for degradation creating a self-regenerating system. Arable Cathedrals is a place of sustainable production, where spirituality in nature and coexistence in society can be found.

Here what is going to be presented is our vision of the future city of Rome.

The territory is part of metropolitan area of Rome. According to the study of history and the analysis about this territory, we’ve learnt that the city is growing, the population is growing, and the city is expanding in space. Although they would live in areas that now are farms and fields, but for sure their lifestyle would be like a citizen, they need more food, more energy, more transportation, better connection to other areas, etc,. In a word, bigger demand of food and energy. The site now is impressing with its product provided by nature, but can the nature also solve the problem of over population in the future？

The territory is part of metropolitan area of Rome. Since the world population is growing, and taking into consideration the limitation of Rome city center, it’s not hard to predict that there would be more people living in the metropolitan area out of city center and they would occupy a bigger part of city population. although they would live in areas that now are farms and fields, but for sure their lifestyle would be like a citizen, they need more food, more energy, more transportation, better connection to other areas, etc,. In a word, bigger demand of food and energy. the site now is impressing with its product provided by nature, but can the nature also solve the problem of over population in the future？ perhaps we need to find a way to make the land even more productive. now most of this area is occupied by agriculture, so in the future, to meet the increased needs, we need to improve the efficiency of agriculture, increase the area of agriculture, at the same time make more spaces for residence and energy generation. the concept is to take to take the element that could be found in this territory, and rebuild them in a technical way. By lifting some points of ground, more artificial hills are created.

So basically, the point here is to increas the surfaces for agriculture.

We already have beautiful landscape here, we have soft curves of land, and amazing hills covered by buildings and feids. We would like to continue the landscape, and to make some new artifatial hills for people. We used a script to simulate the process of how the monts would grow and change with time.

The logic is that growth would start from some points where more people gathere. First layer would be put here, and according to further growth, more layer would be above. So the monts will start to grow from some certain points, and then expand and influence neibouring area.

So finally there might reach the end, where there gathering more needs, there is more layers and higher monts. The curved surface would be occupied by crops.
