Project by Jinyang ,Michele, Taiesha, Prawit

The Port of Barcelona are the nexus of material and data flows. As the locus of intense development and social exchanges at all levels, the Port in 2115 should reinviite a scenario to interact with the environments.

By transcending the monofunctional infrastructure through a rhizomatic layer, the project acts as a Responsive Landscape to fluctuate the inherent territory between natural surroundings and stratification of infrastructure, incorporating civic possibilities on site upon which such systems cross.

People have been dreaming, painting, writing and planning their ports from the beginning of time. The project presents an imaginary concept of Barcelona’s port 100 years from now. This project developed a system in which people will have the ability to create their own surfaces, their immediate public spaces, by using and calculating real time data systems.

Ports are fields of energy, like a living body cell, they are always constant changing, and full with potential. In Ports have all kind of ships and boats, with huge variety of programs, sizes, no. of people etc. The surfaces system we have been developed can affect all of these parameters together.

This system can change and adapt to any situation, at any given time. The surfaces are fluid and movable. This is a tool to accelerate, intensify and enrich sea activities. This is a new way to create life inside the sea.

And this is the way we want to see ports in the future!

we started by defying the most important notions for us , that represent the future in the way we want to see it

We started with four items – a particular section for the terrain, the cable car as device, the tourist as user and art for the time factor. With those elements we should create an urban structure that will be contemporary in 100 years.

The site

The location between Montjuic and the harbor is full of contradictions. On one hand it is a place with lots of connections. The ships are landing, bringing thousands of people and tons of goods to Barcelona every day. A big street is connecting the airport to the city. And the view from the castle to the sea is stunning. On the other hand there are lots of frictions. The street, connecting in one direction, is a huge barrier in the perpendicular way. From the top of the mountain the sea seems far away, although well seen. The hill slope itself is a barrier, which makes the castle on top inaccessible from the seaside.

And though every tourist visiting Barcelona is passing this place, nobody ever stops there. Whether the people come from the big cruise ships or if they come from the airport, they always pass the constriction between the harbor and the Montjuic. As well as the inhabitants of Barcelona, close enough to see it every day – nobody is aware of this place.

The data

We chose the tourist as our main user of interst. To find out more about the movements of the tourists, we used the geolocation of online platforms like instagram or flickr to map the images taken in Barcelona. With this data we where able to see the touristic hotspots of the city. But not only the information about the place, but also the content of the images was interesting. The uploaded pictures show, what touches the people, sometimes it is a particular monument, sometimes it is a stunning view or a sunset.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFlRP9pzmi0

The structure

Although the site is ignored by tourists as well as by the inhabitants of the city, we could find some beauty in this place. From the points of interest, that where given already on the site, we formed a structure, responding to them as well as offering a new life and interest to the location.

The structure consists out of two surfaces, one is forming the activities of the users, for example it shapes a big arena for concerts. The other surface is reacting in a passive way, it responds to the movement and distribution of the users, so if a lot of people are in the same place, it will open up, if the people are more distributed, it will intersect more with the other surface, shaping smaller rooms. The structure will embrace the incoming tourists as well as providing a space to the locals for recreation and interaction. Locals and tourists merge there in bigger events as well as small workshops. The structure also provides space for the port activities, interweaving leisure facilities with commercial and industrial functions. According to the needs one is more weighted in the distribution than the other, responding to the contemporary necessities.

form evolution:

We believe that there are a thousand ways to make people happy although most of them involve some combination of expectation and gratification. Tourism for example usually has a lot of expectation around it. We want to experience a different way of life, because (and I think we can all agree) people want whatever it is they don’t have.

A life spent in pursuit of pleasure can in fact an admirable choice. So long as nobody gets hurt hedonism can actually be a pillar of a utopian society. We can look at A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley as an example of a hedonistic society. However one way that this civilisation fails is the lack of choice and the rigid definitions of pleasure.

Two of the earliest schools of thought on pleasure were the Epicurean and the Stoic, each of which provides a completely different outlook although surely both are valid. To put it simply whether you volunteer at the children’s hospital or pretend to be Christian Grey good for you! We don’t judge.

Hedonistic societies are often associated with freedom and food and orgies , but could just as easily encompass education and sports and health care. However aside from social needs or individual wants what else can give us pleasure?…

…Can architecture? Certainly it can! How does sitting by an open window while it’s raining make you feel? Or being a hundred stories up and seeing the city moving beneath you? These are just two examples of the millions of ways architecture can give each us individuals pleasure. Therefore what we propose putting the power back into the hands of the collective.

Already we can see that technology is enabling people to have more input on the greater movements of society and the economy ; for example Kickstarter and Wikileaks. We imagine that the future will be a kind of “hyper-democracy” where governments will no longer have leaders because every decision can be made by referendum. People will have more responsibility for their regional politics, economy and even their urban environment. To that end we have reduced human desire into three spatially quantifiable pairings – sun and shade, space or proximity, and exclusivity or inclusivity.

SUN_This need varies from person to person and day to day. For instance, some people like to wake up to the sun shining through their window…

SHADE_Others prefer their bedrooms dark and cavernous…

OPEN SPACE_We know that some people enjoy peaceful surroundings…

PROXIMITY_We also know that some other people prefer proximity between each other…

EXCLUSIVITY_There are plenty of people that enjoy the deference of other, having doors open and always in a situation of control and power…

INCLUSIVITY_there are also people who would not give the warmth of melting into a crowd and becoming part of a tangle of arms and laughter…
