The idea is to have a quite solute meditative experience while reflecting your state of being on the water.
Below you’ll find the presentation itself and the final video.

From the very beginning I had the idea to use a brainwave sensor as an input. I was very interested in the Alpha and beta waves. Both of they have reciprocal effect on each other. One is responsible for relax state of mind and the other one for attention.

Lucky a came across this great tutorial. Which shows how to hack a brainwave toy, connect it with ardurino and visualize it’s data in processing. Here is the link.

Here is the video

hacking a brainwave sensor from Arfurqan on Vimeo.

Here is the final intended idea.

The problem with this sensor is the signal stability. It very rare the the signal is stable, but lucky for the time it was stable we were able to make that video.

<<<<screenshot of signal red>>>>>

Then I got another brainwave sensors From university of UB. The department of Psychology were able to lent me a brainwave sensor ( Thanks to Alfonso).

<<<<image of the brain sensor>>>>

<<< screenshot>>>>

Thanks to David we were able to connect it with MAX-MAP, but it only give junk values. This brainwave sensor uses it’s own software to visualize the data and naturally the values from the sensor send to software via Bluetooth are encrypted. We need to decrypt these values. to make send out of it. A third party software is unable to do that.

So as how much I had wished It’s looks like i won’t be able to use the brainwave sensor for input. I would love see the full level of these brainwave sensors. But maybe NEXT TIME!!!!

So this time I finally managed to make the box, make a max max msp patch using microphone as an input, and also find the right speaker for the job. Previously I fried in total 4 speakers.

So here is the Video

IMG 5832 from Arfurqan on Vimeo.

testing of sonic water from Arfurqan on Vimeo.

so this this is how it was done.

On the laptop Max Msp

The max msp patch is really simple. I take the input from microphone scale it from 40 hz to 120 hz. Then I send this information to the speaker to vibrate on that frequency. here is the patch.

Making The Box

The box is made up of MDF panel. Just got it laser cutted. Glued it together. Sealed it with silicon and painted. The hole in the center is for the speaker. I put latex sheet on the hole so i can put speaker below.

Set-up

The set up is really. Laptop taking input from microphone, converting it into frequency by using Max-Msp. Then sending it to the speaker.

Sitting on an out of balance plate surrounded by nothing then water. The water resonates with you as you try to find your balance. Trying to find your center of gravity, within it also trying to find a common ground between you and the water, which moves like the ocean, all always in flux always in motion.

So I take these images and thoughts as my starting point for my final project. Upon my initial research I found out about Cymatics.

I have always been interested in the phenomena of sound and Cymatics is an important part of that because sound is nothing then particles set in vibrations and Cymatics is the study of this visible vibration.

Here are links to Youtube videos on Cymatics

So I started with small scale experiments to study the relationship the frequency on water, non Newtonian fluid and myzeen.

Here is a video in which I use non-Newtonian fluid.
