Taking advantage of the manual process that Gaudi used to design the columns, he implemented in the sagrada familia, led us to merge the aspects of the digital tools as well physical fabrication. Using Rhinoceros, a 3d modelling software and grasshopper, a visual programming language; we were able to efficiently model different columns and bifurcations to represent the results. The outcome was achieved by using a geometry, which as it ascended up through the column, rotated clockwise and then anti-clockwise. The volume defined as the column resulted from the intersection of the two rotations. The fabrication of the column gave us a clear understanding of why we got the effects of the rotations, but more importantly, we were able to comprehend Gaudi´s methods of design in an era where no digital tools where available. Through our group exploration of form finding, we could come up with different outcomes that not only used Gaudi’s technique, but also could innovate in the looks and the way the columns bifurcated.

We drew our inspiration from nature as Gaudi did. Through our first column we studied the bifurcation of a tree. By developing a complex structure which emerged from two different rail inclinations and boolean intersections of circles with varying diameters.

Our second column replaced the circle inscriptions with a triangular geometry in an effort to reduce the amount of material causing imbalanced weight. The resulting geometry was more efficient in terms of material usage and stability.

For the third column, we drew inspiration from the canyon and we figured that by combining characteristics of the first two profiles, we could achieve a similar effect.

We believe that the first profile had the most potential for bifurcation at varying heights of the column because of the strategic intersection of circles

Today were the final presentations for the Bifurcation seminar led by Mark Burry, Senior Architect of the Sagrada Familia. Inspired by Gaudi´s columns in Sagrada familia, the workshop explored firstly the possibilities linked to the description and representation of columns and the creation of a potentially underlying geometrical guide, and secondly, how to branch columns and join them elegantly to the trunk.

Every group had the opportunity to design through computational methods and later built their columns using “Gaudi´s column machine”, PVC half pipes and a lot of plaster. This direct connection between the digital design and physical modelling led the students to a more embedded understanding of both learning experiences and integrate one with the other.
