Additive fabrication presents great potential of growth in many industrial sectors, as well as in the fields of research, space, health and art.

Thanks to the versatility of additive fabrication techniques, in recent years new product concepts have been developed, as well as marketing opportunities linked to these that open the possibility to new business models (customised fabrication, bio materials, intelligent products).

The day itself was dedicated to the generation of a comprehensive view, through a multidisciplinary approach, of the opportunities that arise from the additive fabrication technology.

In this occasion Master Director Areti Markopoulou gave a lecture regarding the development of 3D printing in the architectural field, illustrated through the research and development of said tool by IaaC researchers, with a projection of what this tool could allow us to do in the future.

Ten years after the appearance of the Metapolis Dictionary of Advanced Architecture IAAC boosts The Green Dictionary, an ambitious multi-format project (print and digital) focused on sustainable development issues, energy self-sufficiency , creative management of resources, innovation and interaction with the environment, recycling and urban renaturation, sensitive contexts, intelligent cities, relational spaces, active natures, permaculture and more.
The Green Dictionary will be a collective effort boost by IAAC involving recognized experts, IAAC current students and the big IAAC alumni community, collaborative international research units and new incentives and energies.

In collaboration with the exhibition Parameter: Digital Collaborative Design in Tel Aviv, IAAC faculty Areti Markopoulou and Luis Fraguada held a five day workshop called Data Driven Structures.

In this workshop participants were challenged to rethink urbanity based on  information gathered throughout the city. The goal of the workshop was to understand how could data-driven structures affect the construction of the physical world, how cities and its built elements could be viewed as informational architecture systems.

Led by Areti nd Luis (above), the students worked on 4 case studies in Tel Aviv that were chosen based on urban criteria such as attractors,density, public space and heavy infrastructure.

Student groups visited the 4 different case studies and walk around them with the ASKit, a sensor kit developed at the Fab Lab BCN able to gather information on temperature, light, movement and CO2 as well as the specific longitude and latitude at each moment gathered by an integrated GPS on the sensor kit.

Students extracted the collected data from the ASKit and map them in order to understand the case studies based on real time collected data.

Based on the information extracted students made urban proposals and rehabilitation strategies for the 4 case studies. The intent of the workshop was not to merely interface with the built environment but to implement strategies which transform built environments into information systems.

Part of the workshop’s strategy was focused on testing ways of collecting the urban data by using the ASKit and others were focused on how those data could inform a structure that in its turn gives information to the city network.

Students developed their proposals by using rhino, grasshopper and ghowl (a plugin for rhino developed by Luis Fraguada) and they worked on fabricating their proposals using the new CNC milling machine that was set up and inaugurated by Areti and Luis.

Small, independent, and global. IaaC opens new opportunities for project development and collaboration in Brasil. IaaC team members Areti Markopoulou (IaaC Global School Director) and Tomas Diez (Fab Lab Bcn Project Manager) visited Sao Paulo to offer two conferences both at the post-graduate and undergraduate program of architecture and urbanism of the “Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo” of the University of Sao Paulo, and to define collaboration opportunities in the development of research projects pursuing the application of the new technologies in the construction of a more efficient, sustainable and advanced architecture.

An international cooperation agreement has been signed between IaaC and FAU-USP, and his Director Sylvio Barros Sawaya, reinforcing the relationship between institutions, by the knowledge transfer and support from IaaC on the development of new fabrication facilities and LAME-USP.

The Master in Advanced Architecture students visited the exhibition Fabrication Laboratory at DHUB Barcelona. An exhibition designed by IAAC and curated by Marta Male-Alemany. Areti Markopoulou, Nota Tsekoura and Carlos Ipser explained them the exhibition step by step and familiarized them with the technology of digital fabrication, the experimental tendencies and its possible future, while having the chance to see firsthand works of important profesionals in the field.
