Solar radiation reactive skin

Assignment 2:  Building Component
Group members:

Liliana Viveros Luz Michelle Lavayen Renata Stefanelli

Description

The goal of the assignment was to study the relationship between information, design and fabrication and implement that data flow into a physical object. We developed a definition to create a data machine that influences a design informed by external climatic or ambient data.

More specifically, we worked with a building component (a skin) that changes its behavior based on climactic forces such as solar radiation. In this example, we tried to figure out the best orientation for solar radiation capture/absorbance of the skin according to its shape and surface.

This eventually would help calculate which is the best possibility for greater amount of energy production (kwh.) This research is very important and useful to our group because we are working with this type of data in the Self Sufficient Studio. The tools used where Rhino, Grasshopper, Kangaroo, Weaverbird, Geco and Ecotect.

Assignment #2:: DATA MACHINE: The FLEX DOCK

by Carolina Aguirre, Xiomara Armijo, Carlo Caltabiano

The goal was to create a Data Machine that can perform as our main structure, allowing the ships to cross through it while it goes down and restore its position. The GH definition is able to behave as our simulator.

The DOCK, THE SHIP AND THE ROUTE
The Dock is defined by a grid formed by independent structural elements that are visualized as one but can perform individually. The data defines the boundaries of the Dock: its total dimension, number of structural elements within and distance between them.
The ship is the element that will follow the Route. The data to use of the Ship: its lenght, width and depth, to calculate how the Dock has to adjust depending on each different one and its crossing speed.
The Route is the path that the ship traces each time it has to go across the Dock determining its next behaviour. The data managed are the coordinates with the position of the Ship, from the point of origin to the point of destiny while crossing the Dock.

While developing our “machine”, we fabricated one instance of our system to test its operation. The physical model is more like a “studio machine” than a finished one, because it allowed us to make some improvements to our work-in-progress, the GH Machine.

Simulation of louver movement react to sun change

this assignment is about creating a machine reacting to external data of environmental forces; we
decided to design an abstract rounded facade with a vertical perforated louver system for shading
in hours with increased radiation from sun.
Depending on the position of the sun and the resulting angle between the normal vector of each
single louver and the sun vector the louvers adjust their position as soon as a certain threshold
angle is or under- or overrun;
the final turning angle is then extracted by a listitem and transfered to fire fly which allows the data
based control of three servos in a louver mockup.
