Seeing is believing..

I have an obsession with waves. It started with working with sound transfer and radios on a project earlier this year, and extended to RFID communication, and it is currently my final thesis research.
The research associated with workshop was around investigating a technology that could exist in the future, and that would make our obsessions come true. I made 2 white boxes, one was wooden, the other was cardboard, and I brought along a number of random objects that could help me investigate the box in different contexts. I kept the waves obsession in the background of my mind, and focused on investigating and playing around with the white box as much as possible, and I have to say that it was quite fun. I made some of the best videos in my live, while taking the box to the park, to the market, and to the see. Thanks to the huge spring which I bought by accident from the horse riding shop(!), and which I have no idea what is it used for, yet, no output would have been made possible without it.

In the park, it was hanging from a tree, and it took part in Tai Chi session, the second day it had wheels and it went around a walk in downdown, then it went to the market, the third day it went to the beach (where my data for this day was lost!), but I still have the video below, where I filmed the sea waves from the prespective of the camera placed inside the spring. Strange! Even though the focus here was mainly on _seeing_ through the box, yet, the sounds generated from every experience, were increadible. At a moment, I could feel that the box was actually..breathing!

For the final presentation, I let the box represent a future technology that will enable us to actually see electromagnetic waves! I made a little DIY projector, using a lense, a lack box and a mobile phone, put the projector in side the box and let it play the video where the camera was placed inside the spring of the hanging box..which looked like live oscillations, and thats it :) . This workshop was amazing in the sense of how it opened venues to think _and present_ and very unusual, yet simple and creative terms.

“If what I say resonates with you, it is merely because we are both branches on the same tree.”
W.B. Yeats

Humans communicate. Trees communicate. Humans are trees. This project speculates about how we perceive the the plants, trees and the forest as a system. A backdrop for this speculation is the idea of trees that communicate. This idea rather comes from the sphere of art and literature than science. We all have read about talking trees in poems, fairy tales, myths and novels. But there are only few examples from the field of science. During the research I came across the scientific study by O.E. Wagner (W-waves and Plant Communication, 1988), about the capability of plants to communicate. Plants can emit chemical substances that can stimulate and communicate with other plants. The oscillations of these W-waves can be detected with electrical devices. Trees as transmitters and trees as receivers.
That undermines our idea of a forest as a quiet background for our exile from everyday urban reality. Whey know about us, every time we enter their territory. But we don’t know that they know. We lost it long time ago. What if we could perceive their communication?
The project is a speculative “gadget”, containing a future technology that is able to receive the W-waves and amplify them for us to hear. Using this technology when walking through the forest one would be able to listen to the communication of trees and their awareness of our presence. What would they tell about us?

Ocean Moods

for blog1

What fascinates me the most is water’s feature of infinite transformation. Clouds, ice, rain, snow, fog,  frost, foam. It can fly, sink, float, vapor, sparkle, swirl. Be soft, liquid, hard, solid, fractured, transparent, mat, specular. it has millions of shapes and comes from the one ocean. Idea of cube is ability to travel the ocean and see how water changes in various locations. It transforms on the basis of temperature, wind and pressure data received from different places of the world. Changing micro-climate  inside glass cube transforms water. Position changes by rotating and lifting cube.
