Hyperborder Port: Nader Tehrani Review

Barcelona Port is in the edge of the city where different flows and fixities coexist together. The suggestion that different footage took from the port gave to us was the notion of the border. Boundaries or limits are part of the natural and urban composition that could be considered as negotiators between elements and actions; flows and fixities. The perception of the border is predominant in a port. Besides the idea that a port is the limit between the water and the land, it also means political, urban, social and economic boundaries.

The concept of the first approach we developed from the site was a visual record of all the type of limits we found in the port. The waterfront is a limit between the land and the water that has been shaped through the time. Also we found important to refer Kevin Lynch description of borders: “Borders are linear elements not used or considered as paths by the observer. They are the boundaries between two phases, linear breaks in the continuity. These border elements are for many people importan organizing featureas, particularly in the role of holding together generalized areas”. For us, this concept is very important in order to understand the image of borders that cities have, and maybe even rethink it.

SALT
reformative interventions in the Llobregat delta

The current agenda is a take on the notion of juxtaposition; a nomadic town on the aquatic landscapes of the Mediterranean sea by the port of Barcelona that expands and dilates standard urban protocols over an entire site, in this case being the open sea. Anchored at the Llobregat delta by the port, it focuses on the notions of autonomy, public ownership, and a dynamic process of formation, using the potential of the sea itself as a deployment environment in which salt is the key ingredient.

Construction is based on a fast setting process. Using the latent technologies in digitally-controlled construction and fabrication, these constructions take place in basins, in which a highly concentrated brine solution is injected into. A mesh is placed in the shape of the desired cast and iron rods are charged with a minor amount of electricity further accelerating the final growth stage till first transport.

Port i-Fungus

Commercial ports are essential elements for cities growth, prosperity, and play a big role in developing and supporting the trading power of the country or even of bigger regional scale.Ports are the first platform for goods exchange and providing the society needs, But most of the time its functionality is limited to its commercial nature and does not support farther public needs or ecological growth. In general ports expand to claim its surrounding and impose it self on the near environment and can lead to its deterioration. The port iFungus is an experimental approach to promote the ports function and to add a new layer of complexity to its system by providing filtering mechanism inspired from biological systems and fluid dynamics studies which can lead to better ecological system, enhance public interaction, and  landscape outdoor education.

In this stage our objectives are to find the best solution to integrate the filters system to the port using the tectonic features of the area and by considering certain parameters can guide to the main master plan of the system which must respond to the fluctuating behavior of the pollution carried in the wind. Second objective is to experiment with different components responsive designs using Arduino technology to achieve the best way to harvest the harmful gases from air and  process them to have fresh water to be distributed to the surrounding areas.
