“When we began to design our component for the vertical installation, we initially experimented with a variation of shapes, some were space filling, while others were more design oriented. As we began to refine our conceptual model, we realized that it was essential to take into account the structural support of the central pipe, as well as the connection points. While the top and bottom points could easily be connected using a series of straight lines in Rhino, through the use of Grasshopper the model was able to develop into a more complex shape. The original lines became piped curves along a lofted mesh that allowed for a more dynamic representation of the basic connections. These curves intersect each other throughout the model to ensure more structural stability. We also added a few more pipes in the middle and the top of the model to allow for additional support.”
