The third exercise was to design a hexagonal cement tile that reflects on Barcelona’s history of walkways and house tiling patterns. The main concept for the design was to refer circles to actual rain drops that are falling on the surface; randomness and differentiation in sizes represent the ‘spread’ of rain fall.
We started the design with the “Indian Jali” (Lattice Screen) as our inspiration. The Jali is a perforated stone screen consisting of intricate ornamental work using complex geometrical shapes and connections.
Inspired by the Indian traditional folk art know as rangoli. The tile represents one of the many designs/patterns of the rangoli art.Rangoli is generally made during the Indian festivals in the living rooms and courtyards floors. They are meant to be scared welcoming areas for the Hindu deties.These ancient symbols have been passed down through the ages from each generation to the next, keeping both art form and tradition alive.
