Lucy Mustgrave MAA 2011-2012 Open Lecture

Lucy Musgrave had a lecture at IAAC last Thursday under the subject: ¨IDENTITY, The unruly subject of social urban landscapes¨. Lucy after analyzing the existing urban fabric of London in very tight connection with the citizens behavior, she  presented some projects that she is developing and explained  occasions were individual actions (small projects) of the citizens in a city like London could  indeed transform the urban public space,  saving a certain identity of the area.

Lucy is a leading practitioner on issues surrounding sustainable communities and urban design. She is the Director of Publica, a London based planning and regeneration consultancy that advise developers, planners and communities on what makes successful and sustainable neighbourhoods and cities. The practice specialise in revealing, understanding and valuing the existing character of places in order to address change as a positive and inclusive process.

Lucy’s particular expertise lies in the integration of social and cultural issues of place, with spatial masterplanning. She has played a key advisory role in policy recommendations, strategic planning and urban design frameworks, and in the advocacy of design quality.

Her approach is marked by a commitment to excellence, international best practice and delivering change through the active engagement of the widest range of users and potential partners. She has championed emerging practitioners and best practice, was responsible for the publication of two UK government sponsored directories on the best young architects in Britain and co-authored the Thames and Hudson publication ‘Design and Landscape for People – New Approaches to Renewal’.

Amongst many advisory and board roles, Lucy has been a member of the UK government’s Urban Sounding Board; the Greater London Authority’s Public Realm Advisory Group; the Mies van der Rohe European Prize for Public Space; the Young Architect of the Year Awards; a trustee of The Photographers’ Gallery, London; an external examiner at the Department of Architecture & Spatial Design, London Metropolitan University and a jury member of the Holcim Sustainability Awards 2008 and 2011. Lucy was made an honorary fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 2001.
