SIMULATED

The thought was to overcome the limitations of the milling machine and the concrete hence present a tile that would appear to be visually soft and contrast to both the nature of the material and the machine. To achieve our goal we focused on two main aspects the first being the use of shadows to [...]

spli-angulation

Our intention with this experiment was to create a hexagonal grid within the tile boundaries which could be universally distorted to create topography or other dynamic surfaces for de-centralized irrigation to the edges. The channels for water flow are derived from this grid using a simple script and are embedded within an undulating surface so [...]

Fractile

Being inspired by the perpetual geometry of fractals in which similar shapes recur at progressively bigger scales, we created a flower-like pattern based on our Grasshopper definition.

Swirl Stone

The third and last Digital Fabrication assignment it’s done, our task was to revisit the famous Panot hexagonal cement floor tile designed by Gaudi in 1904 and generate our own design tile with new technologies like the CNC milling machine. The task began with the development of the pattern as a three dimensional treatment of [...]

The Ripple Effect

When designing the pattern for our tile, we examined the behaviour of raindrops, and the effect they have when hitting the tiles of Barcelona. Creating ripples in the concrete, we duplicated the intricate patterns of the raindrops within our design. These patterns flow through the four tiles that we created. Using a variety of [...]
