The third and last Digital Fabrication assignment it’s done, our task was to revisit the famous Panot hexagonal cement floor tile designed by Gaudi in 1904 and generate our own design tile with new technologies like the CNC milling machine.

The task began with the development of the pattern as a three dimensional treatment of the top surface of the tile considering a height restriction, the channeling of water through the tile and the possible connection to our own or others tiles.

Our design was generated from two spirals, each in different direction, that meet in the center. This lines are then carefully projected to a cone that thanks to its slope water can be drained out. Also a special piece of wood is laser cut with the team’s fingerprints design to put it in the mold when casting to achieve an extra pattern.

The Ripple Effect

When designing the pattern for our tile, we examined the behaviour of raindrops, and the effect they have when hitting the tiles of Barcelona.

Creating ripples in the concrete, we duplicated the intricate patterns of the raindrops within our design. These patterns flow through the four tiles that we created. Using a variety of larger and smaller scale curves, these spirals join together to form one continuous pattern.

This liquid surface was then imported into RhinoCam where it was adapted to the form and dimensions of the tile. RhinoCam was used in order to create the spiral effect on the tiles surface.

Once this stage was complete, the milling process begun. From the produced mould, we then filled it concrete and allowed it to dry, resulting in four intricate tiles.

The exercise aims  to understand the various aspects of milling machine, the ability for it to make an architectural detail and to understand its constraints on design.  Focusing on the use of milling tools in order to get specific forms, the exercise was to design a hexagonal tile of size that would be tangential to the points given so as to create a seamless repetition of patterned designs thus the pattern should allow rain water to flow seamlessly in order for it to make its way out of the pattern. The design idea used to create the tile was a method of force fields. In creating this seamless pattern multiple spin forces were merged together and the effect of field lines was extended for better visualization and incorporation into the water evacuation system.

Force fields working with a different set of constraining circles.

Every line of the system is represented as an “escaping” curve. Each point tries to get away from the force field quickly, leaving those paths behind and creating the data tree structure. By playing with parameters like length, force, radius, distance in between, we could create a controlled distortion according to these field lines and force center.
