IAAC LECTURE SERIES: METTE RAMSGARD THOMSEN
Tonight Mette Ramsgard Thomsen gave us a lecture questioning the role of digital in architecture: How can new ways of understanding the digital lead to new ways of understanding the material? Often digital and material are seen as different domains in architectural thinking.
By questioning the role of the digital, her talk pointed to new ways in which we can think material practice in architecture. The talk presented work from CITA’s research portfolio and showed case its practice based research method.

Brian Peters -IAAC Alumni- presents BUILDING BITES
Brian Peters, a real brilliant IAAC Alumni, has been published today in DEZEEN, the world famous design and architecture digital magazine, for his work about the adaptation of a desktop 3D printer to produce ceramic bricks for building architectural structures. His work, called Building Bytes 3D Printed Briks, is now on show at Dutch Design Week. The resulting Building Bytes project predicts that 3D printers will become portable, inexpensive brick factories for large-scale construction.
Now based in Amsterdam, Brian is co-founder of architecture studio Design Lab Workshop and is currently working with DUS Architects to create a large 3D printer for making full-scale structures.
CONGRATULATIONS BRIAN!!!!

Marcella del Signore invited at IAAC Lecture Series
Tonight IAAC welcomed the italo-american architect Marcella Del Signore, who gave a lecture about PROTOTYPING THE TEMPORARY CITY
Today the notions of temporality and event play an important role in the strategic definition of the contemporary city. The concept of the temporary city unfolds out of an understanding that the city as our social, economical, and ecological environment is rooted in a four dimensional scenography. In contrast to static master plans and technocratic top-down strategies, designers, artists and more recently city planners are exploring temporary tactics to provide immediate response to urban issues and to act against the lack of local urbanism.
DIGITAL FABRICATION PRESENTATION – Laser Cutting
Today during the digital fabrication class it has been presented the first assignment results.
This first step has been focused on the development of a system based on component proliferation using the cutting machine; the main requierement of the exercise was to reach a focal point of the two windows in one of the main rooms of IAAC, creating a virtual ceiling to generate a continuos surface in the space.
Students assembled all the cutted components and installed them in the hexagons given as a work area. 25 groups (of 3 students each) developed different proposals using polypropylene as base material, together with the plywood structure of the hexagon.
