MAA S11.Material distributions with Panagiotis Michalatos

Material distributions: Computational methods in structural optimization seminar explores the use of optimization methods in the field of design and fabrication. Custom made software will be provided in order for the students to explore the potential of methods such as topology optimization, stress aligned reinforcements and perforation patterns as well as more conventional function based form finding. The workshop started with an introduction to structural information from the point of view of computational design [numerical descriptions of materials, models and results] and the tools and methods that will be used.
Students will be required to design and fabricate a small scale project using structural information as a driving factor. The workshop seeks to explore the degree in which many models and methods used in computational structural optimization make various assumptions that render the materialization of their outcomes open to design interpretation.
