OTF – Students Proposals Presentations

Students of the Open Thesis Fabrication, presented to their tutors. The proposals of the projects that they are interested to work with during their studies at OTF program and the direction of research that they wish to follow.

The main Studio tutors of the Open Thesis Fabrication are Fabian Scheurer and Mette Ramsgard Thomsen.

Professor Fabian Scheurer is a computer scientist who seeks to interface the abstract order of digital systems with the creative chaos of design. He graduated from the Technical University of Munich after studying computer sciences and architecture and worked as assistant at the CAAD group of TU-Munich, as software developer at Nemetschek Programm system Gmb , and as new media consultant for Eclat AG in Zurich. From 2002 until 2006 he researched and lectured as a member of Ludger Hovestadt’s CAAD group at the ETH Zurich. His scientific work focused on the practical aspects of artificial-life methods in architectural construction and has been applied to a number of collaborative projects between architects, engineers, and fabrication experts. In 2005 he co-founded “designtoproduction” as a research group at the ETH. Since 2006 he is an associate in the company of the same name, realizing projects for UN Studio, Daniel Libeskind, Renzo Piano, Zaha Hadid, Sanaa, and Shigeru Ban amongst others.

Mette Ramsgard Thomsen is an architect working with digital technologies. Through projects such as Thicket, Slow Furl, Strange Metabolisms and Vivisection she investigates the design and realization of a behavioral space. Her research centers on the design of spaces that are defined by physical as well as digital dimensions. Furthermore on the relationship between computational design, craft and technology framed through “Digital Crafting” as way of questioning how computation, code and digital fabrication challenge the material practices of architecture. Mette Ramsgard Thomsen is Professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, where she heads the Centre for Information Technology and Architecture [CITA]. During the last 6 years she has built the center which now includes 12 active researchers and research students. Mette has researched and taught at the Bartlett School of Architecture, the Department of Computer Science, University College London and at University of Brighton, School of Architecture and Design.
