GSS2014 The Next City // days 5 & 6

Over the weekend, on days 5 and 6 of the GSS2014, the Barcelona group were introduced to Digital Design Tools for Architecture and Urbanism. Both mornings the students had a Digital Design Tools Tutorial with Luis E. Fraguada, and then in the afternoon worked on their Digital Designs in groups.

GSS2014 The Next City // day 4

Today, day 4 of the Global Summer School, the Analysis phase of the GSSBCN continued with Spyros Stravodavris, further developing the site specific feasibility study.

In the afternoon, the GSS2014 BCN group headed off to the Sagrada Familia, where they were given and explanation on the development of the project, as well as a technical tour of the construction site.

GSS2014 The Next City // day 3

Today, day 3 of the Global Summer School, the Analysis phase of the GSSBCN continued with Spyros Stravodavris, using tools to assess the solar potential of the site and identifying the optimum areas for the installation of solar renewables to meet energy demands, through the development of a feasibility study.

In the evening, we were joined by Vicente Guallart, Chief architect of the City Council of Barcelona and one of the founders of IAAC, who presented his vision of the Next City, or more accurately the next Barcelona: Barcelona 5.0. The lecture was followed by a discussion with Vicente, the students of the Global Summer School, and IaaC Master Program Director Areti Markopoulou.

GSS2014 The Next City // day 2

Today, day 2 of the Global Summer School, began the Analysis phase of the GSSBCN where building physicist and solar simulation expert Spyros Stravodavris got in depth with tools for simulating the energy potential of built structures.

In the coming days, participants will understand how to use these tools to calculate the energy potential for building sites and entire territories.

GSS2014 The Next City // day 1

The 2014 Global Summer School on the Next City kicked off today. The morning session in Barcelona was opened with a tour of the Fab Lab Barcelona with Luis Fraguada, showing the diverse machines,and explaining and demonstrating how they function.

We then moved to the Auditorium where the St Petersburg location joined us in streaming for the IAAC Dean Manuel Gausa’s welcome words, as well as an introductory lecture by Luis, discussing what Advanced Architecture is, and what are its potentials towards the Next City. All the students and staff then presented themselves in a few short words.

After lunch, the group went to tour the Next City site in Torre Baró, where the workshop project will be implemented.

Reshape Digital Craft awards // projects & ceremony @ FAB10

The first edition of RESHAPE | digital craft competition, winning projects and wards ceremony at Fab10!

The competition involves several partners: IaaC  (Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia), Fablab Barcelona, Solido3d and the Mediterranean Fablab, with the media partnership of ArchelloCityvision, e-architect and 3d-dreaming.

The competition has selected various innovative ideas in the field of design and digital fabrication. The selected projects, and the related manufacturing processes will now be inserted into our online platform and proposed on the market through a specific e-commerce website.
