DAVID MOCARSKI introduced by ENRIC RUIZ GELI – ART CENTER meets IAAC

The Lecturers tonight were presented by Enric Ruiz Geli, and cocktails followed the lecture at Cloud9, Meadi-TIC.

ART CENTER – ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN presented by David Mocarski, James Meraz, Kenneth Cameron and Jason Pilarski.

Experience Design addresses the relationships between: Body • Materials • Space & Emotion

We design Human-Centered design from the first moment of encounter, to the last moment of interaction.

Our Department is about: Designing the total Spatial Experience. We believe that the strength of the project message is based in the power of the story content and context that drives the project, the interaction, and the emotional interface. Our Department masters a wide range of spatial projects in many scales from Brand driven retail design, hospitality design to theme based restaurants, residential and exhibit & exhibition spaces. We see ourselves delivering a stronger and more inclusive spatial experience driven by the responsible use of materials and building & manufacturing practices. Our passion is about designing everything inside the box as well as re-defining what, where and why the box is. Because of our involvement with spatial experiences we are leaders in the design of furniture, lighting and interior components. We are looking to address the needs of a design driven future, rich in meaning, use and function, built on a foundation of strong research, conclusion and development.

Friday 10th of January 2014
Mette Ramsgaard Thompsen
Lecture: CITA Research Practice.

@ 19.30, IAAC Auditorium
Open to the Public

METTE RAMSGAARD THOMPSEN
Mette Ramsgard Thomsen is an architect working with digital technologies. Her research centres on the relationship between crafts and technology framed through “Digital Crafting” as way of questioning how computation, code, material and fabrication challenge architectural thinking and material practices. Her work is practice lead and through projects such as Thicket, Slow Furl, Listener and Vivisection she investigates the design and realisation of a behavioural space.
Mette is a Professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, where she heads the Centre for Information Technology and Architecture [CITA].
CITA uses a practice based research methods focussed on the conceptualisation, design and realisation of working prototypes and full scale demonstrators. CITAs work has a strong cross-disciplinary focus consolidates new collaborations with interdisciplinary partners from the fields of engineering, design, robotics and material science. We are proud to announce that this year IAAC and CITA will be collaborating in the development of the Research Studio in the Masters in Advanced Architecture investigating Digital Materials and Intelligent Constructions.

Cloud 9 and and Art Center are building together the project “a Mediterranean case study” in Aiguablava. The professors David Mocarski, James Meraz, Jason Pilarski and Kenneth Cameron and four students are in Barcelona to develop the construction and to meet the IAAC – FabLab. Art Center is the school number one in America in car design and product design. They are the designers of Apple stores, they have the cameras of James Cameron, designers of BMW cars, of TESLA cars, and the professor David Mocarski is the chairman of the Graduate & Under Graduate Environmental Design Department at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, he has an approach Holistic.

DAVID MOCARSKI
David Mocarski has explored the boundaries of the creative process for more than thirty years. He is the principal of Arkkit forms design, as well as chairman of the Graduate & Under Graduate Environmental Design Department at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena USA. Arkkit forms was founded in 1982 as a highly inter-disciplinary design studio. Arkkit forms has explored projects as diverse as packaging for Baron Philippe Rothschild, France and Taylor of Old Bond Street London, explored Furniture collections for DWR, Design Within Reach, Fiam Italia, Driade, Frag, Viccarbe, Ello, Galerkin and Artedi, designed corporate Brand & Identity development for: Vichan Winery, Napa Valley and CrossLynn Vineyards, entertainment graphics and collateral for Sony-Columbia-Tristar and a long list of contract, residential and exhibition spatial projects. RESHAPE ® digital craft competition

131021_reshape_bando

IAAC, Noumena and Advok communication are very pleased to announce the launch of RESHAPE ® digital craft competition.

RESHAPE ® is a competition of computational design and digital fabrication focused, in its first edition, on the topic of LIVING space.

RESHAPE ® is seeking designers and fabrication centers to create a network of ideas and production.

All ideas have to present a clear fabrication strategy, taking into consideration economic and production aspect.  All techniques must be connected to the use of digital machines such milling, 3d printing and laser cut machine. The scale can vary from small to large size objects.

Is allow to present furnishing, lighting, decoration or tools elements.

We ask participants to be product designers and to design as makers.

RESHAPE ® can became an opportunity for designers to express their ideas and for FabLabs to be part of a new fabrication community.

The competition involves several partners as IaaC (Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalunya), Fablab Barcelona, Solido 3d and the Mediterranean Fablab, with the media partnership of Archello, 3DDreaming and Cityvision.

FALL TERM PRESENTATIONS – WHEN ENERGY BECOMES FORM

This afternoon the Studio lead by Claudia Pasquero, Marco Poletto and Carmelo Zappulla, When Energy Becomes Form, presented their prototypes to an international jury composed by Silvia Bures (agricultural engineer), Joan García (GEMMA UPC), Tomasz Jaskiewicz (TU Delft), Manuel Kretzer (ETH Zurich), Mitchell Joachim (Terreform NY), Josep Muntañola (ETSAB UPC), Enrico Dini (D-Shape), Manuel Gausa (IAAC Dean) and Areti Markopoulou (MAA Director).

Energy is at the centre of the development of the contemporary urban landscape, however we are facing a situation where the energy structures of these cities are often segregated, hidden from the places of urban life. The bio-technological Prototypes presented aimed to subvert this paradigm of segregation, through the study of morphology, materiality and aesthetic novelty generating the emergent qualities of specific flows of energy and information.

FALL TERM PRESENTATIONS – WIND ENERGY MACHINES

This morning at the Valldaura Self Sufficient Labs, the Wind Energy MachinesStudio lead by Javier Peña, Rodrigo Rubio, Oriol Carrasco and Stefanos Levidis, presented their finalised prototypes, designed specifically for the site, to a international jury featuring Manuel Kretzer (ETH Zurich), Josep Lascuraín (SGM Biologist), Jose María Pujol (TECHNOWIND), Pep Mascaró (Chief of Collserola Park Projects), Pep Salas (ENERBYTE), Enric Ruiz Geli (Cloud 9), Manuel Gausa (IAAC Dean) and Areti Markopoulou (MAA Director).

The prototypes studied the ambiguous links between energy and society, through the fabrication of an energy production machine, aiming to activate new social spaces, strategic engagements and community making processes. The machines were deployed in Valldaura, transforming IAAC’s forest campus into a prototype testing field, proving that energy cycles are not only key factors in the current change in the urban paradigm, but that they can also be serious social catalysers.
