GIOVANNA CARNEVALI
Giovanna Carnevali was born in 1974. Since October 2012 she is the Director of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe in Barcelona.
Since then, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe has developed important international projects, highlighting the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2013 and 2015, the coordination jointly with MoMA of an event about European Architecture entitled “Where do we Stand?”, the exhibition “Made in Europe” in the Biennale di Venezia 2014. It has also curated a summer course in Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design entitled “Rethinking Europe – European experience in the city development” and participated in the Beijing Design Week 2014.
Before she graduated cum laude from the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) and the Genoa School of Architecture (UNIGE), she received several grants, worked for Joan Busquets and participated in the exchange program with the University of Cluj-Napoca in the field of Architecture and Environment.
Her graduation project aroused interest among important multinationals such as Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Paramount Pictures, and was finally acquired by the city council of Genoa and in 2000 it became the Plan for the Transformation of the Waterfront.
In 2012, while living and working between Italy and Spain, she received her PhD at Genoa University with the thesis “Port-region: sea-port-territory integration for a sustainable development”.
In 2001 she founded Liguria Spin-Off, the association of professionals, companies and academics for the development of university-company experimental and research commissions. She has also collaborated as a professor at the Architecture Faculty of Genoa and at ILA&UD and has been director of Erasmus Mundus, the official European Master on international cooperation in sustainable emergency architecture at the UIC.
She cofounded SELF Arquitectura, participated in several competitions and won some of them, and has also edited several publications and written essays in magazines. She continues working in International Cooperation projects with private foundations and NGOs such as Architecture for Humanity and has collaborated with Barcelona’s city council in the development of projects together with UN Habitat.
