Sou Fujimoto – The primitive Caves

The reading by Sou Fujimoto- The primitive caves talks about the natural process of evolution of architecture, with two elements from the nature that have played a big role in the evolution of architecture.

He starts by distinguishing Caves and Nest to be two elements from nature which have a total opposite ideology to each other, where caves are the fluid spaces where the planning and spaces come out according to the need and the use of the space changes over time. whereas on the other hand a space like a nest which is very rigid in its planning and has a very definitive form and shape.

The caves have played a big role in the learning process for humans in the field of architecture, and over the years the caves changed their shape according to our needs. And we developed a basic framework and sense in the whole process of adaptability, which became the basis of what we today call  ”Architecture” .

The Gradation- He say the hybridization of both the elements the Caves(Adaptive environment) and the Nest(Planned environment) are the new concept and form in designing ideal architecture in today’s world, with  the fluidity of the caves with a sense of space and planning as in a nest we can achieve designs which are ideal.

Musical Notes- He metaphorically represents the musical notes to the basic elements of architecture and how these musical notes are embedded in our subconscious. It is because of the same reason that we can sense and feel the richness of the buildings and structures we see around us.

Detached- Connected- In this note he explains how different spaces as connected and detached from each other at different times and how their ca-relation changes with time and how the utility of these spaces in co- relation to each other differs over time.

House as a city – The co-relation of the micro to the macro how a city’s character is guided by the people that live in the city and their lifestyle, the co-relation of the city with the people living in the city binds the whole fabric together and the tradition and the culture are a result of this.

Nesting-  Nesting explains the transition spaces and states that these transition spaces are the ideal spaces for experimentation with design and architecture, these spaces have the maximum amount of flexibility.

Forest- the forest is a metaphorical space which can be interpreted by each person in a different sense and the way every individual interprets the space in a very different way which is in co relation to the personality of the individual.

Prior to division- it explains how architecture is connected to nature and architecture can never loose its connection with nature.

Locale- Architecture has a relation with its local surroundings, the design of the space, the utility of the space and existence of the space is in direct relation to its surroundings

Architecture as a cloud- the human tendency to have a change in the trend, fashion or design of a space because of the need to have a change, but at the same point the change is inter-related with previous trend and the identity of the trends have their existence because of the other trends which existed previously.

The Ruins- The ruins were never intended to be ruins but over the period of time the places became nonfunctional. These spaces are unintentional accident they were never designed to be ruins but over the period of time the space lost its use and turned into a wreck.

The conclusion of the whole paragraph is how over the years humanity has progressed from a little element like a cave and evolved over time a set of rules that guide us and provide us with a sense of designing spaces, it is a very atmospheric relation in that sense where we have derived every perimeter in architecture because of the restrains which nature provided us.
