MAA02 – MID reviews

MAA o2 Students presented the work as it has been developed, until now, under the guidance and tutoring of Jordi Pages i Ramon and Lluis Viu Rebes (Max de Cusa Architects). The students have just finished the 1st out of the 4 parts of the Thesis development. The 1st part of the thesis was mainly focused on a geometrical research through computation so as to create a methodological framework. A rather comparative study of growth strategies where weight, stress and other physical parameters, applied on a certain geometry, could give a rich package of observations that could pass them to the next step of their thesis.

The jury consisted of: Edouard Cabay, Panagiotis Michalatos, Areti Markopoulou and Nota Tsekoura

S11. MATERIAL DISTRIBUTIONS Seminar_Final Presentations

During an intense week workshop, IAAC students developed a small scale project (benches prototypes), developed and conducted under the supervision of Panagiotis Michalatos, using structural information as a driving factor.  The workshop explored the degree in which many models and methods used in computational structural optimization make various assumptions that render the materialization of their outcomes open to design interpretation. The students were working in groups, using different materials as cardboard or wood, while the tools used that they used were : Rhino + Grasshopper + custom grasshopper components for near real time Finite element analysis Custom Topology optimization and structural pattern generation software.

MAA Spring Lecture : Interfaces for design- by Panagiotis Michalatos

¨Interfaces are changing your intuitive understanding…¨ as Panagiotis explained in his lecture yesterday at IAAC. Originally from Athens Greece with the last 7 years leaving abroad, from Sweden to London and from London to USA and Boston, Panagiotis Michalatos is exploring the potential of software  interfaces that will optimize the design and structural possibilities while will open a much more communicative path between architects and their clients. Panagiotis presented several projects that he have worked on as well as the interfaces that he has developed while he was working in AKT II and after.

MAA S11.Material distributions with Panagiotis Michalatos

Material distributions: Computational methods in structural optimization seminar explores the use of optimization methods in the field of design and fabrication. Custom made software will be provided in order for the students to explore the potential of methods such as topology optimization, stress aligned reinforcements and perforation patterns as well as more conventional function based form finding. The workshop started with an introduction to structural information from the point of view of computational design [numerical descriptions of materials, models and results] and the tools and methods that will be used.

Melissa Sterry (E2HUB) – MAA Spring Lectures

Melissa Sterry started her lecture ¨Building A Bionic City: The Place Where Science Fiction Becomes Fact¨ with the question:

What is the city of the future?
A question that, as she says, humanity has been pondering for millennium.

” …Architects, planners and developers generally present the future city as an idyllic setting, comprised pristine buildings and infrastructure, with not so much as a piece of chewing gum stuck to the pavement… ”

Futurists, sci fi authors and filmmakers have envisioned and have presented different versions of future realities and future societies. Robots, Synthetic biology, extreme speeds, huge amounts of energy etc. are the compromising protagonists of these future mega-cities.

To the question : Can we transform cities into intelligent, interactive living organisms? Melissa had to say:

JDSA Francisco Villeda_DS1_Workshop

Last weekend DS1 had a workshop with Francisco Villeda . Francisco Villeda is an Associate Architect at JDSA Copenhagen (Julien de Smedt Architects) and IAAC alumni.  Francisco has experience in international competitions and projects and has a high level of professionalism regarding to design, visualization, and team management. The students during the workshop were focused on their  design project as they are being developed at the DS1 studio line of the MAA. Hours of hard work, presentations, physical models and discussions have been the main goal of the workshop this weekend. Lots of energy at iaac after a grateful holidays. Fresh ideas brought from their research studio trip to Japan are growing day by day.
