Opening Ceremony & Inauguration Lecture MAA 2013-14

Tonight was the IaaC Opening Ceremony, welcoming all, and in particular the MAA 2013-14 students, to the academic year.

After a warm Welcome, to the new students and Eric Owen Moss, on behalf of the academic coordinator Silvia Brandi, the night was kicked off with some kind and interesting words on behalf of Mr Antoni Vives, the Deputy Mayor for the Urban Habitat of the Barcelona City Council.

Manuel Gausa, IaaC Dean, was then invited to share some words of welcoming, then recounting the very interesting story, and history, of IaaC, its founding, , its achievements, and its future goals.

Areti Markopoulou, Masters Program Director, then extended her official welcoming, as well as some inspiring words, going deeper into IaaC, its community, and also the stimulating context that Barcelona offers IaaC.

 

The Inauguration Lecture with Eric Owen Moss (Eric Owen Moss Architects, SCI-arc Director) then officially commenced.

IAAC MAA 2013-2014 Visit to Valldaura Self-Sufficient Labs!

Today the IaaC team, along with the new MAA 2013-2014 students, went up to Valldaura to visit the Valldaura Self Sufficient Labs.

The day was kicked off with a tour of the facility, allowing them to understand in detail what was presented to them earlier in the week.

This tour was followed by the presentation of the first term Studios, one with Javier Peña, Rodrigo Rubio, Oriol Carrasco and Stefanos Levidis; and the other with Marco Poletto, Claudia Pasquero, and Carmelo Zappulla.

A 0 km paella lunch was then served, giving the students time to relax and get to know each other.

The afternoon was then again dedicated to the First term Studios, that have officially started!

IAAC MAA 2013-2014 Master Program Welcoming!

Today the Institute for Advanced architecture of Catalonia welcomed the new MAA 2013-2014 students.

The evening was kicked off with a few words of welcoming on behalf of the Academic Coordinator Silvia Brandi, followed by the IaaC Dean Manuel Gausa.

The Master Program Director Areti Markopoulou then presented the Institute, showing past projects developed in IaaC, among which Hyperhabitat, the FabLab House, the Endesa Pavilion, and the Smart Citizen Platform. The presentation continued with an excursus of the future lines of research development that will be undertaken during the Masters in Advanced Architecture, giving the new students an idea of what extents they can potentially reach during their time in IaaC.

Nuria Diaz, the Director of the Valldaura Self Sufficient Labs, presented her domain, outlining the Labs’ current development and advancement in the field of self-sufficient and sustainable living, and its potential future development, in which the students will have the opportunity to partake.

Finally the new students were called up to the stage to briefly present themselves, giving an idea of their hopes for their future experience in IaaC, as well as being given a cnc FabLabBcn fabricated bag, a small token of the potentials of the cnc machines and prototyping that they will shortly get into.

GRADUATION CEREMONY…AND PART-AY!!!

IaaC 2013 Graduation Ceremony and Party were held at the Valldaura Labs,  located in the Collserola Natural Park, in the heart of the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

The ceremony kicked off at 7pm with a speech by Willy Muller on behalf of Tony Vives, from the Ayuntamiento de Barcelona, followed by discourses on behalf of Manuel Gausa, IaaC Dean, Areti Markopoulou, MAA Director, and Xavier Gonzalez, MAI Director (together with Carlos Gomez).

The now IaaC Alumni from MAA01, MAA02, and MAI then walked down the red carpet to receive their Diplomas and shake the hands of all the before mentioned Directors, as well as the Academic Coordinator Silvia Brandi, and the Research Studio Tutors Willy Muller, Maite Bravo, Enric Ruiz Geli, Mireia Luzárraga, Claudia Pasquero, and Marco Poletto.

Aldo Sollazzo and Gabriela Gonzales Faria, the student representatives, were the invited to give a brief speech, sharing very nice words with us.

It was then the moment for this years awards, provided thanks to FabLab Barcelona. And the winners were…
