MAA02 INAUGURATION: SOLAR BUILDING

IAAC inaugurated yesterday the second year of the two years Master’s programme in Advanced Architecture MAA02.

The new Masters programme allows senior students, which already develop the appropriate sensibility and tools during the first year programme, to get into the deep of a personal investigation, about the themes of the advanced technology, architecture and urbanism. During this second year students are required to deal with a project counting on the possibility to develop it with international faculty and enterprises, highly specialized in different fields.

This 130 ECTS two years programme is acredited by the UPC School of Professional & Executive Development.

Lluís Viu Rebés and Jordi Pagès i Ramon will be leading the core Design Studio that will focus on the Solar Building not only as an energetic and geometric issue, but also aiming at problematizing its physical materiality, as to say developing, testing and building Solar Matter®.

Solar Matter® is a family of physical prototypes that will have the particularity of being “intelligent”: their dynamic, flexible and responsive qualities engineered into their structure will function as the basis of student’s proposals for the Solar Building.

“Energy Trilema”:Mariano Marzo Lecture

On Monday IAAC welcomed Prof: Mariano Marzo, full professor of Stratigraphy at the Faculty of Geology of the University of Barcelona where he teaches Petroleum Geology and Energy Resources.

Mr Marzo’s research interests focus on the application of clastic sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy, reservoir modeling and basin analysis to the exploration and production of hydrocarbons.

During a very inspiring lecture, titled “The Energy Trilemma”, he exposed how energy sustainability is being waged simultaneously on three battle fronts, that might be represented as a triangle with three E vertices: Economy, Energy security and Environment. In energy policy it seems advisable to seek the centroid of this hypothetical triangle: if we take action close just to one corner, we run the risk of neglecting the other two fronts of battle and lose the war.
